well your lucky the dock gave up the ghost before your ipod. it's possible there is some damage to your ipod also but those docks will fry your ipod toot sweet. I would not use the dock at all but if you are i would first try hooking your ipod up to a computer with a usb just to make sure it's not damaged in the charging port.
if you have a RCA jack in the dock you can use that, but the ipod is not made to play through the charging port, the docks are an after thought and I am not sure why but possibly incorrect voltage or voltage surges, but i have replaced at least 30 motherboards of customers who played them on docks. your ipod wouldn't by chance be a 30gb video or a 3rd gen nano? seems those are the 2 most susceptible to this issue.
My Warning: if it still plays music leave it off the dock
Its unlikley that it was caused by sweat particularly if it was in a case. You may want to check that it isn't a firmware issue by restting it (hold down menu and center buttons - WARNING: wipes memory). If that isn't helping send it in.
