  • romus Jan 19, 2008

I am relieved its nothing serious, Thanks for everything, if possible can You let me know where i could get hold of the ICs ?

  • romus Jan 25, 2008

Hi I have just replaced the two ICs that were in the TV. When I turned the TV on, I have experienced the same symptoms. The lines on top and bottom are curved, there is a triple vision and mostly the screen appears reddish color. I still can't manually converge the red line, only blue I have control over. Please give me your feedback on this problem, I am not giving up on this so easily - at least I have brushed up on my soldering skills.

Hi I am not sure if You got my message that I wrote last Friday. Basically I have checked almost all resistors and I am getting a reading from every one I checked. I didn't see any opened ones but who knows if the reading from them is the correct amount of ohms as it should be. I send you a picture of something I have found on the back of the board, probably a fuse, that is the only thing that doesn't give me a reading. Please let me know what You think I should do.

  • romus Jan 28, 2008

Thanks for reply, I have changed the two ICs and the I have checked most of the resistors but not one of them were open, I am still getting the triple vision and curved sides, any solutions?

Sounds like the convergence amp Ics are faulty they will distort the picture and you wont have any control over convergening the color back into alignment. Can you post a picture of what your screen looks like?

Its not uncommom for the picture to have double even triple images on the screen when the convergence ICs go out. Because each tube projects it own image onto the screen. The convergence amps control this projection electronically. So when the ICs go out the image isnt contrrolled any more so you will get a distortion in the picture and it will look as if there are 2 sometimes 3 pictures appearing on the screen and your picture can bow in from the sides and the top and bottom. These ICs run at high temperatures they fail usually evry five years or so. They are fairly inexpensive. Its the tech fees that shoot the price of repair up. The ICs themselves usually cost about 10.00 each you have 2 of them in your set.

Yes you will have to look inside your TV for a large metal heat sink. they will be attached to that. They are black and will have a white number stamped on them suchas STKXXX-XXX write this number down that will be the number you order and you can get them at the following link. Be sure to purchase some heat sink compound with your ICs. here is the link

Check the resistors right next to the ICs some times when the ICs go they will take out a couple resistors. Usually right next to the hea sink. Just check them to see if any are open.

How can I raise the lines to the of the screen. Out of Focus.

You can't adjust because the convergence correction IC' are bad. The 3 you mention Buttons are probably for focus (electronic) and they won't help your problem. If you moved the CRT top lenses they can be re-adjusted and only affect focus (mechanical).

Your main issue is a convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

Yes, the convergence output IC's have gone bad. They need to be replaced. This is a very common problem with all projection tv's. It is the job of those outputs to properly align where the red, green and blue beams land on the screen.

Picture double, Color messed up

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.
