Smoke came from the bottom near the lower element. The fan still works on the oven and the broil element still works fine. Clock, light still working fine. On bake the oven will only heat to 235. thanks Jon

I'm pretty handy is this an easy fix and what would be the cost of a new element. Thanks Jon

Element was bad. Put new element in and still will not go over 300 degrees. We thing something shorted out ( temp sensor or the board itself, electronic key pad for temp and time. Any ideas. Thanks Jon

You may have a serious electrical problem. Or you may need a new element.

Please provide more info as to the source/location of the smoke.

Please be sure to unplug the unit from electricity before attempting repairs!

This link shows the parts list for (I believe) your oven. The lower element is user replaceable, please use caution! It is number 6, item PS1013226. Please see this link for further info, and info from other DIY's that replaced this part, and had similar problems!

This part could be located at your local appliance store also!

Let me know if you need more help!

Are we sure that the other element is working? Probably not the problem, but might be easiest to check.

We were using the microwave the other night and it started making a loud noise like the fan was running (although the fan was not). We let it sit for awhile and try to use it again but the noise came...

The loud noise and no heat means that the magnetron has failed. It the part that generates the microwaves that heat the food. When it fails it shorts out, causing the transformer to heat up. That is what was causing the burning smell. The cost of a replacement magnetron is around $130-150 range so it may not make sense to have it fixed.

Microwave oven makes a load humming noise & it made a loud pop noise

It sounds like the magnetron may have either failed or is not being supplied with the extremely high voltage required to run it.
Make sure the !!!!capacitor is discharged!!!!! before attempting any sort of repair.
Check the door interlock switches first then the high voltage diode with either an AVO model 8 on high resistance range for short circuit, the capacitor can fail and go short circuit, the feed fuse on the primary of the high voltage transformer and then finally, the magnetron is best checked by substitution.
Hope that helps.

My Whirlpool electric range made a loud electrical popping/cracking noise followed by smoke. Now the indicator light for the left front element is always on. Also when we try to turn on any burner the eft...

Sounds like you have a short in one of your burner switches that may have also taken out your main control. Does your oven work normally? Those error codes are related to 1] control board and 2] oven over temp, so the burner issue is unrelated except in that it may have surged the control.

you can view the switches by removing the rear panel(if this is a freestanding range) and from the description you will likely see the shorted component with some black marks around it. Please unplug the range first,as these wires are live even when all burners are off

KitchenAid KHHS179lss, fried magnitron?

If your magnetron was shorted, the unit would not heat at all.

The sound of a shorted magnetron is usually a loud hum-- but no or very little smell and no smoke.

Components in the High Voltage section -capacitor, diode- give problems if they short out.
