Hello, is your server 2003 setup as DNS server??? if so have you configured forwarder for non- local access? is that a home? or business? is it work do you not have a static public IP address.
here whats happening, when you manually give client the DNS they can resolve everything local fine but when a request for outside world is sent your server doesn't know what to do with it. log on to server open up your dns console, right click on your domain, then select properties, find forwarder tab and add a any reliable public DNS server there ( ie I use 4.2.2.1 (att)) server pretty quick and reliable.
so next time a request is sent to your server and server doesn't have that information it forward that to the public DNS and you will be good to go.
but from your setup i am gathering there is plently you do to improve your network and reduce your headache of manual work.
typical setup: 1- setup DNS with forwarder
2- Setup DHCP on Server instead of router ( trust me its easier than you think)
3- put all setting to for clients in DHCP options
4- reserve IPs for servers/prineters/switches etc.
5- set all clients for DHCP
6-disable DHCP on router.
let me know if your need help setting it up.
i hope this helps
good luck

hello, okay not a problem. first thing you should to make sure everthing is working with having the issue that you currently are is to put the forwarder in DNS and let me know if that solves your problem of slow internet.
reason i say that is to make sure that i understand your network the way i think it is.
and if you are ready to get started on the DHCP server provide me this basic information.
1: how many total servers you have? (windows/linux/etc)
2: how many network printers?
3: network peripheral- switches/routers etc
4: near future plan of adding any of the above its ( we are gather information to reserve static ip range.
6: i see that your router 1.1, and one server is 1.5, what are some other static ip items like?
lets get started
regards
Amar Sondhi
good morning, to setup DNS forwarder, log in on server (ofcourse using administrative account) go to "Start" -> "Programs" -> Administrative Tools" and then click on "DNS". in open console right click on your "server name" (server name is hostname of your SMB2003), click on properties.
on new window that just opened up click on "forwarders" tab, in the area where it says "selected domain's forwarder IP address" right below it type in the IP address "4.2.2.1" and if you know your ISP's DNS you can add that too. when done click apply and then OK.
open up command on the server, run-> type in cmd hit enter,
execute following commands :
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
and then do the same commands on the work stations.
let me know how it works out.
regards
Amar Sondhi
Hi, okay, not a problem log in to your router and on DHCP page check the option to "use defined DNS" and type in 192.168.1.5 (server IP as primary and your ISP's DNS as secondary. go to the worksation your are testing from check everything for DHCP no maual entry, let the workstation get the IP, run "ipconfig /flushdns" and the ipconfig /registerdns" , log off try loging back in and see if gets any better.
also do "ipconfig /all" on workstation and copy paste the results.
don't give we get it going for you.
post back your results
Amar Sondhi
hello, i notice that you are still getting DNS as 192.168.1.1 and thats why you are having this issue.
let do a quick DHCP setup and see if we can relieve your router from DHCP duty.
1:first go on server and make sure server is setup as DHCP server, you can check that by clicking on "configure your server wizard"
2 if it is skip this step: if "DHCP Server" is not checked that means its not, just click on box to check and enableDHCP role, you may need to inser server CD.
3: once done, go to "Administrative Tools" and select "DHCP" then right click on your server(avenuecommercial.local) and select "new scope", click next.
4: type in name and description you like, ie
name: test
description: test_description, click next
5: Start IP Address: 192.168.1.1
End IP Address: 192.168.1.254
Length: 24
Subnet: it auto fill when you type 24 in length
6:Exclusion: leave 30 IP addresses for server/printers in beginging and another 20 at the end for other misc items like switches etc so your config will be : under "Add Exclusion"
start ip address:192.168.1.1 end ip 192.168.1.30 click add
once again Start ip:192.168.1.234 end ip 192.168.1.254
and the click next.
7: lease duration leave it 8 days click next.
8:configure DHCP options, click "Yes, i want to configure these options now" and then click next
9:default gateway screen :192.168.1.1, click next
10: DNS servers, in "parent domain" type "AvenueCommercia.local" and then you can either type server name (hostname) and click on resolve to get the ip (which in your case should be 192.168.1.5) or just type in IP and click (note don't forget to click add after you resolve or type IP manually).
11: WINS servers: type in 192.168.1.5 and click add (note WINS in not required but doesn't hurt to have so just add it) click next
12: almost done: "Activate scope": select "Yes, I want to activate scope now" and click next.
13: clcik finish
14: now you will notice in front of your server name there is a little "RED Arrow" , thats becuase server is not yet authorized to server as DHCP. Right click server name and then click "Authorize".
note: Red Arrow might not turn Green right away.
15: Close DHCP console, wait 5 seconds and then go back to "administrative Tools and open DHCP again, now your server should have a Green arrow pointing UP. all done here.
go to your router and DISABLE THE DHCP.
go to the workstartion release and renew the IP address and then registerdns again.
