Question about Televison & Video

Color Convergence I have a Zenith 52 in rear projection HDTV bought about 5 years ago. I replaced the two color convergence chips with new ones as recommended. Although it cleared up my picture in the middle of the screen, the outside still has seperation in the colors. The ez-focus will not correct the problem, the center symbol (+) lines up correctly, the left side and right side symbols (+) do not. Any suggestions?

How do you go into the service mode and where do you get the code?

  • notwatching Feb 17, 2008

I have a 50" Toshiba 50H81, bought about 6 years ago. Just the other day I turned it on and the tv had extreme blue ghosting. The touch focus feature just resulted in an error message. I tried the manual convergence, but the blue lined up properly on the right side, but the center and left were still out of whack.

HD 1080 Series (WD-55809) - Color convergence issue

I don't know of illustrated instructions but I can provide you with the service manual for your TV. It does have illustrations of disassembly and components as well as schematics. Your set very likely needs new convergence IC chips. This is a common problem with all projection TVs. The repair is not expensive ($60-75 in parts)  but does involve unsoldering and removing the old chips and soldering in new ones. Some times there are some fuses that need to be replaced as well. If you want the manual provide me with an email address.

Toshiba Rear Projection TV picture color is now a greenish hue

Hi, I used to work in Best Buy and one of the key things about rear projection TVs and the reason they push those service plans on you is that the tubes/colors need to be calibrated each year. You can do this yourself by checking out the following website:

http://lgknowledgebase.com/kb/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=3229

If you are not able to adjust the convergence using the remote you will need to replace the convergence chips.

Typical Symptoms

1) Convergence menu does not work for one or more colors.
Such as: Red moves up,down, but left or right fails.

2) Screen is bowed looking.

If you have one or more of the problems above you need to replace the convergence chips. You can get a kit and instructions from www.TvRepairKits.com

Hope this helps :)

The tv has shadow of red and green about 10 inches in on both left and Right sides. Center is still ok?

Your TV most likely has a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Convergence problem

your model has two boards that control convergence. One is the convergence board. the other is the convergence board power supply, usually when more than one color is off its the Convergence power supply that is bad. You can get replacement circuit boards at the following link.

Problem with convergence

you dont need new CRTs (tubes) you need either the convergence Board or the convergence power supply board depending on the symptoms. If its only one color that is out of alignment its most likely the convergence board. If all the colors are out of alignment you need the convergence power supply board. you can get whichever one you need at the following link as they have both of those circuit boards and have free shipping. Heres the link,

If its only one color its the Convergence amp board that needs replacement. If its more than one color you cant control you need the Convergence power supply board. If you need parts for your model let me know and I will post a link.
