When typing sometimes the bottom half of the letters do not show up. The Hammer solenoid is only a couple of months old. The lower case j, q,y, etc. are the worst.. Thank you in advance for your help..

Check to see that the platen is fully seated in the side frames, the black latches do crack and allow the laten to raise up.

It sure sounds like the platen (black rubber roller) is not seated press down firmly on both ends.

Perhaps the person that replaced the print solenoid didn't tighten the screws and they have worked loose.

Make sure the ribbon cartridge is fully seated...try removing it and reinserting it to make sure there are no labels or paper jammed under it.

The bottom half of the letters typed dont show up

Press down firmly on both ends of the platen (black rubber roll) it should snap into place, if it comes back out one of the latches is broken and will need replaced.

Wheel is missing letters, broke off I guess. Does the wheel get old and fall apart? I haven't used the type writer in a few months. Should I get another wheel or call for repair? Thanks! Karen

The wheel usually last for many years. I'm assuming you are getting 2 vert lines in place of the missing letter (hammer face). Used replacement wheels are available for 29,95.

My Wheelwriter 5 types faded and incomplete letters. We changed to a new ribbon, but problem is still there. Seems the pressure is not hard enough.

The solenoid for the hammer is probably sticky or the pad is worn.
This requires disassembly for cleaning, lube or replacing the pad.

Letters now well formed

first of all check out replacing the ribbon cartridge.if the cartridge is got torn or over stretched.so replace the ribbon . There is a solenoid down to the left of the horseshoe shaped printwheel mount. If it is gummed up or the nylon hammer plate is broken or missing the hammer will not strike the printwheel and you will not get print out or broken letters on print. Check the solenoid with a thin screwdriver by pulling and pushing the plate and rod in and out as if you were trying to make the solenoid push the hammer toward the type wheel. If the hammer moves when you bush the solenoid then it may be gummed up or not getting electrical impulse. If it moves but the hammer doesn't move then the cushion at the tip of the solenoid is missing and the gap is to great for the solenoid to act upon the hammer.
This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

Type Bold letters

There is no bold feature on a WW3 you must upgrade to a WW 10 or 15 to get bold. There was at one time a bold printwheel but I haven't seenone for years.

Most likely the plastic cap on the print solenoid is broken they are available but are a bit tricky to install.

Only typing half letters and numbers

On the WheelWriter series, sometimes the platen may pop out of position, causing only half the letters to print. If this is the case, easially solved... Using the left and right platen knobs, firmly push down to lock it back in place. Hope this helps....MediaMan
