You can try, but instead of purchasing it rather take your PC to a computer shop and tell them that you would like to install 2GB of RAM, would they please see if it would work. If it works then you can purchase it and if it doesn't then you wouldn't have wasted your time and money on some-thing that you have no use for.
First find out if 4Gb sticks of the right type are available for your machine, and that the machine supports that much RAM. Then make sure you carefully order 2 x 4Gb sticks.
You have purchased the wrong type of memory or one of the memory sticks are bad.
Try inserting just one at a time.
If the same problem, re-install the orig. memory and replace the purchased memory.
You can go up to 3GB of ram with a 32-bit operating system. A 64-bit operating system is needed to use 4GB or more.
In your case, you should be able to, as long as you have the memory slots. If you're out of memory slots, you will have to purchase a stick with higher memory density.
Memory type is the major problem with the 741GX chipset. Very touchy. I used Crucial PC3200 High Density memory to start with (2 x 1 gig Memory), system was lagging even though adjusted settings in bios. whenever a USB device was pluged in, the system would stop responding. Switched to low density memory and no problems since (Ultra PC3200 (2 x 1 gig Memory), and the USB device problem is also solved. I am running WinXP with SP2.
the memory you're about to purchase will not work. the maximum gig that the computer can handle per stick is only 1 gig. this system is not designed for 4 gig barrier.
