Gateway 450ROG Heating Up, Fan Constantly On, Screen Distortions

My Gateway 450ROG is 4yrs old now. Extended 4-yr warranty just expired on 9/30/06. From nearly the beginning, this laptop would get warm, really warm. Had to replace those cushiony feet on the bottom of it several times.

Now the thing gets warm, as warm as it used to, and the sreen starts to do the shimmy, gets distorted, shaking, then freezes up. I have to use a paperclip to turn it off on the bottom. I let it totally cool, then it starts normally. Soon after, it starts the shimmy again.

I brought it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy, paid $60 to have them check the hardware (only hard drive & memory--I didn't know memory was hardware) and they said it was ok. Concluded it must be a software problem, virus, etc. Funny the fan was listed on their form under hardware check, but it was not checked off at all.

Can you please help me? I can't afford to buy another laptop, & I really need this one.

Re: Gateway 450ROG Heating Up, Fan Constantly On, Screen...

I am working on a Gateway 450rog for a client. I was having the same problem. I believe the issue is the CPU is not being properly cooled. I took apart the laptop and removed the heatsink. I saw that any thermal compound that was between the CPU and heatsink was gone. I cleaned off both parts with ArctiClean and then put on some Arctic Silver 5. I no longer have the messed up screen issue occuring.

If it is like the 450ROG's that we have, the video has failed completely by now. I'm blaming the motherboard, because I've replaced everything else. Phantom.

I would also try blowing canned air on areas that trap dust and dirt. Dirt definitely can be a problem that is affordable to fix yourself with little tech skills.

If you paid them to fix it and they didn't, complain to the manager. Bring the fan to his attention. Software wont cause that kind if problem, unless its the video driver, which in your case it doesnt mess up when you first start it up, so thats not it. You will at least get your money back. You are right about the heat it will cause a lot of problems, because its size.
Please let me know how you make out. I hate seeing people get screwed.

I have a gateway nv44 and it will on power on if the screen is in the right position. I have to hold down the power button and move the screen up and down until it come on. Then it works fine.

It sounds like you have worn, loose or cut wires at or near your laptops hinges. You need to contact gateway if it is under warranty or the purchase place if you have an extended warranty through them. If it's out of warranty you will have to find a technician that repairs gateway laptops or pay for gateway to fix it.

Hi, I have a 1.5 yr old gateway NV52 laptop that has stayed in sleep mode for two days...I've tried turning it off and cutting back on but it is still in sleep mode...please help

Hi aiomason.

Remove the AC cord and the battery from the notebook. Re-attach battery and AC cord and power up the notebook. This will clear the Ram memory and force the operating system to "Cold Boot", in other words start the operating system loading up from the beginning instead of resuming from Ram the last time it was active. This proceedure should restore your Gateway Notebook to normal operation. Post back your results and good luck.

Gateway 450ROG, will not start. Red DVD/CD ROM

I have the very same problem, the Drive light turns red, the screen is "black" and the battery charging light indicator on the front is off. No differance if I'm traying to power up on battery or AC-adapter.

Before this problem appeared I had problems where the laptop was powering off, with no warning, and I had to restart it. This happened several times and was going on for about a week before it died totally. Can it be the CMOS battery on the mother board? Anyone having clue what the problem could be?

Gateway 450ROG notebook repair

I would personally say that it was the motherboard, but it would be impossible to guareente that unless an inspection was carried out.

The support I could offer if you wanted me to take a look would be for you to send the laptop and power cables to us, we would take a look. If we cant fix it we will return it to you with no charges. If it can be fixed you would be informed of the cost before we go ahead and do it.

Please note that you will have to pay for the delivery to us in any case.

Your son may have solved your problem. You will be amazed at how much dust can accumulate inside a laptop. I clean mine out at least once a week. The drop in temp is suprising! Please report back if that solved it.
