You could try to remove the drive and install it on a "USB hard drive enclosure" ( not to expensive) to see if you can get the data

it's possible your current enclosure is bad and not the drive

thanks for rating

Toshiba Canvio 1 TB connection problem - physical layer issue may be on cable or on HDD mini-USB port itself

More than likely, this is some sort of fault in the logic of the external enclosure. The solid light indicates that the drive is powered and is awaiting access while the blinking light means that it is busy working. If you are unable to get the drive to do anything (whether reading data from the drive or storing data to the drive), then I would guess that it is time to see whether you still have warranty coverage on the drive and, if so, get it replaced under warranty.

In my experience, I have found that Toshiba drives are very unreliable and therefore would recommend that you replace it with a Seagate if this drive no longer has any warranty coverage. Of all the drive manufacturers, I have found Seagate drives to be the most stable and reliable. Others may recommend Western Digital but I replace failed Western Digital drives on a constant basis in my computer repair business each and every week while Seagates keep on going. I base my recommendation on being in business now for over 25 years.

Hi there, I'm using a WD drive with a Macintosh. It accidently became unplugged, or partially so, when my young son brushed up against the plug. Since then it won't mount and there white light on...

Ouch. The blinking light is bad. But try this:

1. Run the WD discover tool
2. Go to "configure" and acknowledge there is a blinking light. This might give you access to the data and drives.
3. If the status says "good" then everything is fine. If not, then you probably have a bad drive and need to contact WD tech support. Hopefully you still have a warranty for it if this is the case.

Let me know if this works!

I have 3 2TB lacie bigger disk triple interface. I use them to backup my data. Unfortunely I lost 2 power supply so I used one for all. Yesterday I backup up all my data on one disk, I unplug this and...

If the power supply doesn't delivers the correct current the hard disks can't spin fast enough and this is detected as a failure by the pc, which cuts the connection. Hopefully by replacing the source all will go back to normal. Otherwise you will have to crack open the cases, remove the disks and install them directly in a desktop to try to access the data on them.

Can't find hard drive on computer anymore. Blue light constantly blinks on Lacie

My LaCie drive was not showing up on my Mac, and making a soft clicking sound ....I thought i was in for expensive data recovery and worse...But I met a guy who told me that La Cie have had a lot of trouble with their POWER SUPPLY and that i should try their customer service. I did, and after a round iof idiotic scripted replies I got to a smart CSR who sent me a NEW power supply. Hey Presto! The drive is back and working perfectly, no data lost!!!

My Maxtor Onetouch 4 500gb external hard drive is not working, the light does not come on any more as if there is no power. When I tried a universal power cord the light blinks really fast, but my computer...

First thing you need to do is to confirm your Power supply is working, i think its a 12 volt adaptor so check wattage rating and then try to power a router or a device that uses the same voltage and wattage with it, an easier way is to check whether the light blinks once very fast right when you stick the adaptor into the external HD's back, if it does, download hyrens Boot CD from and burn it to CD...Most of the tools on Hyrens boot CD work in DOS but a limited amount works in windows, try booting into windows and try using the partition recovery tools like undelete etc, if this does not work you will have to take the actual HD out from the case by dissassembling it and then plug the actual HD without the case straight into your pc via sata cable, restart your pc and instead of booting windows boot the hyrens boot CD Menu, now use the partition and HD checking tools, this should work, if it does not, your HD is irreparably damaged and you might need to mail it to data recovery experts to get your original data back, Hope this helps..

When I t urn on my laci external harddrive I get a fast pace blinking light and when I put my ear to it, it seems that the motor wants to start running then nothing Just a constant blinking blue light!

It seems that you have a problem with the disk-drive inside the case. If it still is under warranty, exercise the warranty to get it replaced.
If not, then disassemble the case, and remove the disk-drive.
Connect it as a "slave" disk-drive inside a desktop computer,
to see if it can be read. If not, then it is "dead".
You could buy an identical disk-drive, and put it inside the case,
to construct a "new" external disk-drive.

I have an external 500GB drive. It was dropped. The blue light goes on, but it is blinking very fast. My Mac does not see it any more. It also does not seem to be making its normal noises (the motor or...

You are hoping there is a reasonably inexpensive way to recover the data from your (let's face it) broken hard drive. There is not. If the data is really important, take the drive to the local computer repair shop and see if they can either fix it or recover the data. Be warned, it will cost nearly the cost of a new one for them to look at it and not fix it. Most decent places can do a forensic recovery of the data if it is of high value to you though. There are several .5 terabyte drives for around 60 dollars in the Sunday paper inserts, I noticed.
Sorry for the confirmation:)
