Strange, I too have the Vtech..all 3 phones don't work...display says charging, then switches to connecting?

  • DallasDazz Feb 09, 2008

I also have the Vtech phones. Strangely, all 3 pyhone stopped working at the same time. I can't answer calls on any phone because they're all dead, although the base still records voice messages. The display on all three phones says "charging," and when I pick up a phone it switches back and forth from that to "connecting" or "searching for base" and "place in charger." How FRUSTRATING! I haven't had this phone set a year yet, and already its' useless. Is this normal? Is it the battery? Given what I paid for it, I didn't think I was purchasing a "cheap" phone. If it's garbage now, I'll toss it, but I'd like to know if the problem can be solved. Thanks

Same issue. All phones are dead. While in the cradle, all phones display "Connecting...". When I remove the phone from the cradle the display reads, "Place in Cradle". This is very frustrating. Has anyone found a solution to this issue?

  • Anonymous Feb 25, 2008

    yea same problem
    a solution would be helpful

  • andyyosh Apr 18, 2008

I'm having the same problem. Tried unplugging the base for a while and unplugging the rechargeable batter in the handset for a while but neither of these tactics worked. The answering machine works fine. Very frustrating.

  • Anonymous Aug 03, 2008

I have had the same problem! I have read the "solution" and wonder if this has worked for anyone else? I have the phone off as we speak. If this doesn't work is there any kind of rebate from V tech since this seems to be a glitch in the phone system itself?

  • Anonymous Jan 13, 2009

same here. and with me three stopped working at the same time. but i still have one that does work. Pain in the butts

  • Anonymous Mar 29, 2014

bought a new handset and cannot pair it. the new handset is the same type as existing model vtech 2650 but just says searching.

I think I know what's going on here, DallasDazz: VTech phones are unlike Panasonics insofar as Panasonics store their caller-ID on each phone itself, but VTech phones store Caller-Is at the base: I know that because I can't access the caller-Id when another handset is in use or when I'm away from the base. So, this strongly implies that the base (not the handsets) messed up: If the base is messed up (in your case), this would disable ALL THREE (3) of your handsets. -- Gordon Wayne Watts, LAKELAND, Fla., USA.

I found a solution that fixed this problem (at least for me). On the vtech site they said to unplug the base unit for at least 5 minutes. Previously, I had only unplugged the base unit for a few seconds. This time, I left it unplugged for about 10 minutes or so and when I plugged it back in, everything was working fine. Apparently there is some sort of capacitor that must discharge long enough to completely remove power from the circuitry.

Good luck and I hope this works for you!

Register the handset(s) to the base by following the instructions in the user's manual under the "Registration and Operation" section.

If you have already registered the handsets, follow the below instructions to de-register. Once complete with the de-registration process, following the instructions in the user's manual to register the handset(s) under the "Registration and Operation" section.

Note: There are two different versions of this unit; please follow the appropriate set of instructions for your version/unit.

If you have a tone/pulse switch on the bottom of base, follow the VERSION 1 instructions: VERSION 1: DE-REGISTER ALL HANDSET(S) (with tone/pulse switch on bottom of base):

1. Unplug power from the base and remove spare battery pack.

2. Hold down [PAGE] while reconnecting power. When the POWER light begins to blink, release the [PAGE] key.

3. Hold down [PAGE] key for 5 seconds. When the LINE IN USE light begins to flash, release the [PAGE] key.

4. The HANDSET CHARGING light will blink 5 times. Within 5 seconds from when it stops blinking, press [PAGE] once.
If you do not have a tone/pulse switch on the bottom of the base, follow the VERSION 2 instructions:
VERSION 2: DE-REGISTER ALL HANDSET(S) (without tone/pulse switch on bottom of base):

1. Unplug power from the Base. Remove spare battery pack.

2. Hold down [PAGE] while reconnecting power. When the base display reads 'Pr', release [PAGE].

3. Press [MENU]. The display will read 'rh'.

4. Press [SELECT] to choose h1, h2, h3, h4 or AL (all).

5. Press [TIME/SET] to confirm.

6. Unplug power from the base, then reconnect power to complete de-registration.

REMINDER: After de-registering the handset(s), follow the instructions in the user's manual under the "Registration and Operation" section to register the handset(s) again.

Bought a used vtech 5.8 phone, charged the battery and now see message "not registered. I can not make calls... how do I register it?

I believe it is telling you it is not registered with the Base Unit. You did get the Base Unit with it didn't you, otherwise you have a paperweight.

If you do have a set then this is the answer

Tip 1 of 1
Step 1: Place the handset in the base or charger. If PRESS FIND HS 4 SEC ON BASE does not appear on the screen after a few seconds, lift up handset and recradle it in the base or charger.

Step 2: On the telephone base, press and hold FIND HANDSET for approximately four seconds. Release FIND HANDSET once the IN USE light comes on.

After a while, the handset will emit a series of tones, and the newly registered handset will be assigned the lowest extension number not previously assigned to another system handset when successfully registered. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 if the handset does not successfully register to the telephone base within two minutes.

How to activate a vtech phone

Instructions
    • 1Remove the battery cover from the back of the phone. Most models have a door that slides downward to reveal the battery compartment.
    • 2 Install the battery by inserting the connector on the battery wires over the pins in the handset battery compartment. The connector will only go on one way.
    • 3 Insert the battery pack into the compartment and replace the battery cover.
    • 4 Charge the phone by sitting it in the charger for a minimum of 16 hours on the first charge.
    • 5 Place the fully-charged phone onto the cradle of the base unit and wait for the display to show "PRESS FIND HNDST 4 SEC ON BASE." If the message does not come up, lift the phone off the base and put it back in the cradle.
    • 6 Press and hold the "FIND HANDSET" button on the base unit for approximately four seconds. The display on the phone will change to "PLEASE WAIT," then "HANDSET X REGISTERED."
    • 7 Test the phone by making a call.

How do I deregister my handsets on my VTech 2656

To be able to register your replacement handset, you must de-register all the handsets from the VT2656 base unit.

Follow the steps below to de-register your handset(s) from the VT2656 base:

1. Take out the handset that sits on the base.
2. Unplug power from the base.
3. Hold down PAGE while reconnecting power. When the In Use light blinks, release the PAGE key.
4. Hold down PAGE key for 5 seconds. When the In Use light begins to flash, release the PAGE key.
5. The handset charging light will blink 5 times. Within 5 seconds from when it stops blinking, press PAGE once.

You must register the handset(s) by following the steps below:

1. After charging the handset, remove it from the cradle, the LCD display will read "SEARCHING FOR BASE".
2. Press "NEW" and then enter the 15-digit Base ID code, located on the underside of the VT2656 base unit.
3. Press "OK". The handset will display "PLEASE WAIT!!".
4. Wait approximately 15 seconds. The handset will display "FOUND BASE". If the handset displays "BASE BUSY TRY LATER", this indicates that the system is in use. Wait until the base unit is in the idle (on hook) mode and repeat steps 2-4.

Cannot reregister phones to the base.

If your base is a VT2651:
1) take phone off of the base's cradle.
2) enter **335782 on the keypad
3) phone beeps
4) remove all batteries from handsets.
5) reinstall battery in 1st handset, and enter the code number for the base unit (sticker on bottom of base). First handset will be set to phone 1
6) repeat step 5 for all other handsets.

If your base is a VT2656, there is no keypad on the base. I don't know the trick to reregister the handsets. I wish I did, since that is the problem I am having.
