I have an FU161ERW5 Westinghouse upright freezer. What # should I set the coldness on? It goes from 1 to 8 but we have it on 4 and all the shelves are covered in ice.

If # 4 is too cold and cause freezing problems try turning it down to #3, if same problem exists then go on down the line. This should take care of this issue.

We have an imperial upright ''commercial grade'' freezer. The top shelf has 2 inches of ice on it. The rest of the freezer is not cold. Door seal is ok. freezer is currently unplugged and defrosting.

just to be sure that your door is sealing properly, put a flashlight into the freezer and turn off all of the lights in the room to see if there are any openings in the seal. Iam suggesting you this coz sometimes a small opening may pass our eyes easily....

if the door is sealing properly......
If this is the type of freezer where the shelves are the evaporator coils, the coolant goes through the shelves(tubing) and the formation of frost is normal and has to be manually defrosted. All the shelves should be as cold asd the top one. The fact that just one has any frost may indicate that it is low on freon. If this is the case you should notice that the freezer doesn't get cold enought just like you said... so check your freon levels.

This could also be because of the thermostat not sensing when the fridge reaches its set temperature and as a result of this the compressor will keep on running and build-up of ice will occur.

Follow the advices in the order prescribed above and you should be set

Purchased a used 13.4 cubic freezer from caigslist yesterday. Upright type. Freezer is set on 7 to cold setting. Shelves are the type where the shelve itself cools the food. No fan in this model and it is...

It takes a while for this type of freezer to pull down in temp. because there is not evaporator fan for air movement. I would watch it for at least 12 hrs .

The top shelf in my upright freezer ices up badly; but the rest of the freezer is great - no ice! What causes this and is there something I can put on that shelf to keep the ice from building up.

Freezer not freezing properly

You have a manual defrost freezer . Ice build up of over 1/2" can act like insulation on wires . If you have no frost build up , and runs constantly , then compressor or refrigerant leak is the problem . Advise to replace freezer . Only 2 parts on manual defrost freezer...compressor and cold control . Compressor will not run if bad cold control . If you have a leak , very expensive to have repaired .

Red alarm light is on on Westinghouse upright freezer

Most probably during transportation either the coolant(previously freon gas) may have leaked out so the pressure on the cooling pipeline causing the red alarm because the compressor will overheat if the fridge is kept running at very cold thermostat readings and no effect of cooling the fridge will ultimately result in the compressor getting burnt. However fist have look at thermostat setting knob which could have loosened during transportation and just pushed into the spindle without knowing the correct angle, thus even though it looks as if on high cool but could also be the lowest setting..........sodeep

Upright freezer. Two shelves freeze up. One doesn't. Why and is this a problem

look to see if the shelves are in fact not shelves but evaporator coils . if the shelf is connected to small tubing, then that tubing flows freon that freezes the shelf. if its clearly not connect to any tubing or piping then its just a shelf and gets residual cold from evaporator shelves. if it is connected to tubing like the others and not getting cold then you have whats called a restriction. . particles have plugged the tubing and no freon is feeding the shelf. if that is happening then consider having a pro recover the gas , unplug the tubing , replace the drier and recharge it. if its an older unit and you are getting by then maybe not worth the expense.

Kenmore upright freezer

1)forget about the key you'll be disposing of this unit anyway
2)the alarm is to tell you that the unit is above ideal temp.
3)the unit isn't making temp due to refrigeration issue. if it isn't cold enough on 3 then 1 won't do it either.

Badly condensating fridge - How do I stop it

sounds as if you have a door not closing possibly. check your door seals, if refrig door doesnt seal all around your going to be getting warm air leaking in and will condense on the colder shelves and upper wall for sure

Freezer frost

An upright freezer that is not frost free will have the coils in the shelves (shelves are non-removeable) and that is where the frost will buildup.  If your model is like this then it will have to be defrosted periodically.  If your not sure then give me the entire model # from the sticker inside the freezer and I will look it up for you.
