Question about Motorola Walkie Talkie 2-Way Radio

2 Answers

TA288 Hi. I have a pair of TA288's and neither of them will switch on any more. The light on the screen flickers on for about half a second,I have put a tester on the batteries and they are reading 3,8Volts so I don't think it is battery trouble. Any ideas gratefully received! Thanks

Re: TA288

How are you measuring the battery voltage? Do you first remove the battery before measuring? If so, then the voltage you measure is open-circuit voltage and cannot be the correct loaded value. It could still be the battery. Try to hook up a jig of the rated power directly to the walkie-talkie battery terminals and see if the problem is solve. That would confirm the usefulness of the battery. Also, with one unit plugged into the charger try to see if the charging voltage comes up correctly. Rechargeables usually last a year or two (never mind what the maker says).

What is the problem when a Transceiver will transmit and receive both lsb and usb simultaniously although only one sideband is selected?

It sounds like you have dirty switches, (they will corrode over time). Do a contact cleaning with some contact cleaner spray and rotate the switches. Another issue with a radio or other electronics that has been sitting idle for many years is a tendency for capacitors to go bad, especially electrolytics.

A good way to bring a radio back to life after a long idle spell is to switch it on and off. Wait half a minute, switch on for a couple seconds and off. Wait again and switch it on for a few seconds and off. What you are doing is applying power for a short time, and letting the electrolytic capacitors gradually rebuild their strength so they don't blow when the full power id applied.

Another way is if you have a variable voltage transformer, you can feed in low line voltage and gradually turn it up to the normal voltge level. This is the preferred way if you have the means.

Screen locked can 16 (model HX270S)

Hi there, I think you might have the priority channel switched on. Look for a button labeled PRI or somthing like that, press it once or if that fails press for 3 seconds.

FR60 intermittent transmission

Hello snorker,

It could be battery / power issue. Two-way radios draw much more power when transmitting then receiving. If the batteries are weak the radio might work perfectly fine on receive and then cut-out when you depress the Push-To-Talk.

Instructions on how to change channels on TECHNIKA MODEL TA-13

Basic Instructions for Technika Model TA-13

On this model there are 7 buttons:
Left to Right these are:

PTT, Push to talk on lh side as screen faces you.
Torch Light (on rh side)

Assuming you have used the power button to turn on the radio, the default channel after installing the batteries is 1 or else the last channel to be used.

Press the power/menu button once-briefly, (the current channel will flash for about 10 seconds.) Then use the Up and Down arrows to change channel. Wait for the remaining few seconds and the radio will return to normal operation.

Press the menu button twice, the letter H or L will appear and can be altered by the Up and Down keys to change the power level of the radio. I think this is transmit power which may help you avoid infuriating local taxi companies. Switch back to High power when you're about to go out for the night and need a ride.

Press the menu button three times. This will turn off Squelch control and make a terrible din. Not terribly useful unless you want to pick up a really weak signal (or find out where the taxi driver has taken your neighbour.)

An easy way of finding a channel is to press and hold the Scan button and then the device will rotate through the available channels looking for a signal. When someone transmits, the scan will pause and you can capture it by pressing the PTT button for a second or two. I have found this helpful in pairing my radios with other sets, or picking out channels that work with friend's radios.

Finally, Volume control is really simple, just up and down when not in any other mode.

I had the instructions, which I think included a mention of all available channels I'll scan and post them if ever I find them. hope this part helps though.

You will find the manual here. The radio is part of the 280 series radios, so there is a general manual on all in that series.
