Question about Vtech IP8100-2 Twin Cordless Phone

Model vtech ip 8100-1

It seems to be dead. LED is not glowing not but the power adapter is working good .i measured the voltage ie 5.2v.

    I have the same problem which occurred after the cable companies line collapsed. There are no led's working.

    I have the same problem and vonage told me I will have to buy a new base unit, but they are currently running about $100. If someone knows how to fix this please let me know. Otherwise I will buy a different type of device that is not so expensive.

    Identical problem as far as I can tell. Power adapter working (page function works) but no ready light and no phone functions. failed a couple of months after 1 year warranty ran out. All sources (Best Buy, Radio Shack, Buy.com, Circuit City and Office Depot) I have tried are out of stock. And I've been out of phone service for over a month.



    Tried rebooting and new power adapter. No change. Vonnage help desk not much help and they are out of stock as well. I suspect a class action failure.

    led lights don't come on. only paging works.

    amazingly this is the 2nd one to konk out right after the warranty expired.

    I have the same exact problem: paging works, but no dial tone. 
    Vonage will send a replacement adapter in 4 days.


    Since there were 2 mentions that a 6v worked, I gat a replacement adapter at fry's. Adapter specs are: 


    Rhino Univ AC Adapter 1800mA (PST-1800ME/FU)
    AC100-240v, 50/60Hz adjusting automatically.
    DC: 3, 4.5, 6, 7, 9, 12v, 1800mA max


    I thought this would work at the 6v setting, but no go. 


    If some one can tell me an alternative adapter they are using besides the ones from Vonage, which I suspect are cheaply made, that would be helpful.

    I had the same problem. No LED light, but the page phone button still worked. I had a multi function adapter, that comes with several different types of plug ends, for a multitude of devices. You can find these at your local Walmart or electronics store. I plugged it in and wham, I had power. I've had my VTech for almost 3 years, but I am guessing the adapter failed to supply enough power. Hope this helps someone.

I 2 have had the exact same problem twice .
Fortunately I have a lot of wallwarts around, and sure enough,
a 6v one does the job.

Why they don't let people buy replacement units and have them ship back the broken ones for reimbursement is beyond me.

This is a known issue with the model of phone. I am now on my 4th unit and still have the same problem every 3 months or so. Vonage will send you a new power adaptor at no charge. This does fix the problem.

I too measured 5 volts and they couldn't explain how it could still be the "wallwart". I tried a 6 volt wallwart and it seems to work fine.

Use multimeter to check output of AC Adapter. If no DC output at required voltage you should replace adapter; available after market units sell for $10 to $15 delivered.

I have a VTECH 6.0 and I believe a lightning strike took out the telephone base power adapter and would like to purchase a replacement adapter.


Any generic adapter will work as long as is is the same voltage and rating on the wall adapter you have. It is a 6 volt 400MA adapter. Radio Shack has generic adapters. Also try your adapter in another wall socket and see if that works.

My Dell Inspiron 1420 will not power up period. The adapter is good. You can not just take the battery out and bypass by using only the adapter as stated in other posts. It does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING when...


You say the adapter is good. I take it this means you have measured the output voltage, not just observed the led glowing. The cables can break internally, leading to no or reduced output. If the voltage is good, then you need to verify that the motherboard socket has not broken away, by measuring the voltage on the motherboard at the socket solder connections, with the adapter plugged in and powered of course!. Not familiar with this laptop, but you need to dismantle as much as necessary to get to these connections. Possibly just remove the keyboard cover if you are lucky. The socket solder joints should be fairly obvious. Socket breakage is also common in Dells, and whilst replacement only takes a few minutes, the major cost is the dismantling and reassembling, so do that yourself - it's not difficult but often tedious!.

It's a bit odd but seems to work. Comes as a winrar file so you need to have winrar to extract it (find it free with a google search). Then open the file index.htm, and from there are links to the various operations.

If there is no power getting to the laptop from the adapter, the battery will obviously be now dead, but not likely to be the problem. It will recharge once the adapter supply is restored.

If there is correct voltage to the motherboard, then you have a real problem that becomes complicated, but hopefully by now you have identified a supply problem.

Worked great for 6 months, now it doesnt start at all, if it is start after 2 minutes it will be shutdown and no charge light is glowing when it is off charge light is glowing but no battery back up. If...

When you connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED light up? If not then -
The battery adapter or the adapter's power lead or the laptop's power socket could be faulty.
Check power adapter’s DC plug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that is printed on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced.
If the adapter is OK then connect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/battery charging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's power socket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position this LED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solder joint where it is connected to the motherboard.
This can be repaired but it requires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket and repair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

Are you using an AC adapter? If so, there's only really one of two things, hardware wise, that could be the cause of your problem: The phone is dead, or the AC adapter is dead. The best way to check of course, is another AC adapter with the same voltage output, then you'll know exactly which piece needs to be replaced.

You may want to make sure that it's pushed in all the way, as sometimes, those round plugs can fool you. Otherwise, make sure that the outlet is fully working.

Remove your pc battery and try connecting directly to AC supply via your adapter. If you have a multimeter, you could measure your adapter's potential difference to be sure of the right voltage output ok. If nothing happened here, then you should open the pc's RAM compartment and remove the RAM(s). Re-install them properly and test one after another. You could also get a fully charged compatible battery and test alone, ie, without AC this time. If all these didn't work, then the culprit is the power unit. Good luck.

Motherboard is getting 12V, 5,2V from power supply. Probably 5,2V is dead. If you have a friend who will give you a power supply. Put in your computer and you will see that is the problem.
