There are many reasons for this, but more information is required to be able to diagnose the problem. First, does the tape move inside the machine or is there no movement other than loading? If the tape is moving, try using the FF scan mode and report whether or not video is seen. Does the tape load properly? Do you get sound with no video or nothing?

Please update this with that info and I should be able to provide you with a solution. Please note that most problems are related to slipping belts or dirty heads. You can try a cleaning tape if the tape is moving inside the machine.

No, the Zenith XBV443 can not record a VHS tape to DVD. This unit is a DVD Player/VCR recorder. It doesn't have the ability to burn data/files to disc. What formats does this play?
U talking about disc format regions?The NTSC disc formats play in the US,Mexico,and Canada.The PAL disc formats play in Europe,Middle East,and Asia.Where ever u bought this portable dvd player in that country that the region's it probally play in that disc regions format.

Recorded dvd's won't play in another dvr
The problem is not the dvds themselfs it is the other play that you are trying to play them in (some players do not play DVD- and DVD+ or any other of self recorded disks) Look on the players box to see all what types of disks it can play!

When I get home I'm going to crack the shell on the DVD drive inside the combo set and see if it;s a simple 'off the shelf' RICOH/PANASONIC/MATSUSHITA DVD-R drive tho. If it is, the replacement part (but not the spec. part from Zenith) from Fryes might be faster and cheaper? Not sure yet.
