Although I don't completely lock up, when I start my webcam up it works for
about 3 seconds then freezes. This happens with Both with the XP driver
(native) and the Logitech driver.

Other than this XP's been great so far

I don't know if this will help you or not, but this was my experience:

I have a Logitech Quick Cam Express (USB) attached to my PC.
Everything went fine - XP upgrade found the cam and installed drivers.

When I went to use "Windows Movie Maker" I constantly got a "Device
does not respond", etc. error - yet, other cam-networking software
worked fine! I couldn't figure out what the problem was until I went
into "Connect To" off the start menu. When I clicked "Show All
Connections", I had something called Microsoft TV/LAN (or similar
wording) connection running - I didn't know what this was, so I didn't
touch it. I read some info on the newsgroups and others mentioned this
program running - also mentioning that deleting the 'connection'
caused no ill affects. I decided I would do the same.

After rebooting, it worked! Windows Movie Maker works fine with my cam
and my other software does too.

I *think* that the XP upgrade trips up somehow if the cam is already
installed and installs this phantom "TV/LAN" connection - which leads
to no where.

See if you have it too - click on "Connect To" - Show all Connections.
If you have it (something like Microsoft TV/LAN), delete it and
reboot.

I hope this helps!

QuickCam WILL work with Windows XP! You don't have to install any drivers because XP will automatically detect the camera. Just open movie maker and under File: select "capture video", do NOT install any drivers because XP and Movie Maker will work with your Logitech Quickcam without installing additional software.

I envy you. I have a Logitech Color QuickCam VC USB and it worked fine
in 98 SE. Device Manager shows a USB  device with problems in XP. I
stuck in the disk that came with it which says it is also for NT 4.0 and
it told me that version only supported parallel connections in NT. So I
went to Logitech's web site thinking surely they would have updates.

They said that since they are producing new models now, they would not
support the camera I bought about a year and a half ago. They said I
should buy a new Logitech camera.

I wrote them and told them that since they didn't support this camera
under the new operating system, why should I buy a new one from them
that they won't support when XPii comes out because they have new models
by next year.

No way no how.

I've loved my Logitech trackball that I've had for maybe 5 years and my
camera ( which still works fine under 98 ). But I'm not going to buy any
more products from a company that doesn't support past products. Other
companies are supporting their old printers and video cards and all kind
of hardware. Just because they now have newer models doesn't mean they
don't support the old one for at least a reasonable period of time. Just
a few months ago I saw Logitech advertising the very camera I have, on
their site, and now they refuse to support it.

They should move to Afganistan.

Did you install the Logitech software for W2K? My QC Pro (dark ring) works
great and the icon is displayed in my Scanners and Cameras.

I found that no matter what I did, XP insisted that I had an Intel camera
installed. Finally solved the problem by removing all Intel camera .inf
files from the WINDOWS\INF folder.

I am having simlar problems with the Kodak DC325 webcam.  Have loaded and
uninstalled the 'official' Kodak WINXP driver twice(unplugging and
replugging in the USB cable as directed).  Camera works fine as long as I
don't try and adjust any of its parameters(like brightness, contrast, etc.).
After moving the adjusting slider bars once or twice, application to which
the camera is feeding a picture, locks up(this happens with NetMeeting and
MS Photo Draw).  It is repeatable.

No other problems with XP.

It would appear from this thread that there are numorous problems with USB
webcam drivers, in general. The vendors and MS need to get hot and get these
problems sorted out.

Here's my personal two cent.  First of all, I'm basically having a very
positive experience with Windows XP (upgrade home edition).  Secondly, I
had a Logitech Webcam Express cam attached to my system.  When I
upgraded the system, XP picked up the cam as hardware as it was listed
in the device hardware list.  When I went to to Scanner & Camera wizard
it picked it up and yes there was a cam pic; however, about 5 seconds
later, the cam would freeze.  This happened several times.

Later, I discovered that www.logitech.com had a driver update for
Windows XP.  I downloaded the update and was careful to read all
instructions.  When re-booted the system and loaded the new updated
software, from Logitech, I experienced such a crashed that I had to just
completely turn the computer off.  Something I don't like.  My cam did
not work with XP driver before nor the updated drivers from Logitech.
Presently, I have discarded the cam - seeing I threw it in the corner of
my study.  When I get the bitter taste out of my mouth, I will attempt
to re-consider a cam under Windows XP.

Other than that I'm very impressed with Windows XP.  All other hardware
and update are working fine.

My Logitech Quickcam Express is working just fine with the built in XP
drivers. Have you tried the camera without loading the Logitech disk? I know
that you will not have Logitech's software, but IMHO the software built into
XP is superior anyhow.

logitech quickcam express
couldnot install the
Hardware, Scanners and Cameras, in the upper left click on
Add and Imaging Device, click Next on the Wizard, and
under the manufacturer is a list of all Webcam
manufactures and to the right specific models which are
digitally signed for Windows XP and that contain drivers
inside Windows XP.  Good Luck!

Firstly you say you installed your web-cam but the
quickcam express software doesn't work. We are talking
software here not web-cam. I suggest that you first go to
control panel/system icon/hardware/device manager. Once
there check that your web cam has been recognised by XP.
If so then exit the system window and click on the
Scanners and Cameras icon. There should be an icon which
represents your web cam. Click on this. The scanner and
camera wizard will appear. Click next and you should see
a picture from your camera. If you have got that far then
your camera is working perfectly.
The software you are using allows you to use your cam as
a video link etc. You don't need this software. To video
conference you can use either windows messenger (assuming
the other person you are talking to has windows xp) or
alternatively Netmeeting. Netmeeting isn't always visible
by default so i suggest you click on the Start button
then click on Run. At the command prompt type Conf.exe
Netmeeting will then start and you can set things up from
there.
I haven't tried logitech web cams. I much prefer Intel. I
have two cams by Intel CS340 and YR76 both of them work
perfectly with XP. When i want to video conference i use
messenger or netmeeting. Why bother with the software
bundled with the cam when you already have the facilities
available on XP, Me 98, 95 etc.

Hope this helps
