i have a problem with towels too. i have checked around the door rubber seal and cleaned it. it did not look bad. still have the smell. they smell good when i take them out of the washer and when i remove them from the dryer. when i dry off with one after a shower is when it smells NOT clean!
i always leave the door open after washing. the washer itself does not smell bad. HELP!
I also have had issues with a bad smelling LG Tromm 2277 washer when we leave the door closed after using it. One note on the LG site mentions that soap/scum buildup on the washer drum can encourage mold growth. They suggested running an empty wash load and then pause it after the water fills and add a hot tub cleaning product (Whirl Out - I got it at Lowe's) and restart the load. This stuff should help remove the soap scum and limit the smelly mold growth. My washer does not smell as bad after using it. I also have run an empty cycle with only bleach using the very hot sanitary load setting.

It's good that you are using HE detergent but you're probably using way too much. To test this run the washer empty (no soap) and if you see bubbles inside that's left over soap that's still in the unit. If so, keep running it empty until the bubbles are gone then start using only about 1 tablespoon of soap per load. The washer uses about 1/10 of the water so you need to use 1/10 of the soap. Use the same amount of softner. The excess soap and softner build up in the unit and cause the smell.
