Question about Canon PIXMA MP830 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Canon MP830 - extreme ink useage

Every time I call the Canon tech support, I get a different answer.

1. One tech will say to not print on grayscale because the printer thinks it is printing a photo in black & white. When I do follow the tech's instruction, the 4 photo ink tanks are sucked dry.

2. Another tech says to only use grayscale if I want the large black ink tank to be solely used. THAT doesn't work either.

3. Another tech says that, even when printing only black, if there is any bold, underline, italics, etc, the printer sees it as a photo and uses the 4 photo tanks to make black.

4. There have been many more calls -- with there never being a satisfactory solution.

I would really like to sometimes be able to print and only use the large black ink tank.

Can you help?

Re: Canon MP830 - extreme ink useage

According to a service manual for a similar Canon printer, the grayscale printing should only use the Pigment Black ink PGI-5BK.

On fast it is 300x300dpi with 1 pass, standard is 600x600dpi with 1 pass and high is 600x600 with 4 passes.

On plain paper in colour it is meant to still only use the C/M/Y and again the big pigment black ink PGI-5BK, it only uses the smaller black ink once you set it to use a photo type paper in the printing settings.

Want to print black only mp830

When you do a print request and get the printer window. click on the properties button on the top right side of the window. This will open another window. Look for the color tab and select Print in gray scale. This will cause the printer to print in black only. This will change to black printer only for this print job. If you want to change to printing in grayscale or black only all the time, open your printers and faxes window, right click on the printer you want to change, on the general tab of the window that opens, click on printer preferences, look for the color tab and select print in grayscale.

I hope you have found this helpful.

While printing in grayscale mode it is using color cartridges. It should use onli main black 520.

Open the printer "print options" or "Print Settings" and select the "Black ink only". I am not very sure about your model, but when you carefully check, you'll see "print in color" "Print in greyscale" it should be somewhere below the "print in greyscale". Hope this helps. Good luck. Thanks for using FixYa.

Canon mp830 not printing in color

It is possible that your print head may be clogged. Even though you have ink, if the print head is clogged it would not print anything of certain colors. I believe this device has separate print heads so you should consider either replacing them or cleaning them according to the manufacturers suggestions. There are detailed instructions in Chapter 10 - Page 148 of the manual. If you don't have the manual, it is available online at

Download the "User's guide" towards the bottom of the page.

Hope this helps - Flub

Canon mp 830 will not scan but will print

Uninstall the software and reinstall. Use an ethernet cable and try scanning. If that does not work then your scanner feature has a problem. Probably very expensive so I suggest you go to the Epson site and look under Clearance. New/Refurbished have a 1 year warranty, replacements are quick and free shipping both ways. A All-In-One is $45 shipped, the ink costs more than that. Check this website for CISS system which saves lots of money.

Pixma MP830 is printing things green that should be red

when you change all new cartridges (make sure all cartridge ok, and the cartridge pins connection ok) still red color lost, it is the trouble at print head ink chanel some of that is too dry for longer time less using , most CANON printer head is separated from the ink cartridge, two way you may try:
1) take out the ink cartridge, drop down a little the special cleaner (best clean tools buy from dealer), to the head ink chanel hole, then set back the ink cartridge and waiting minutes
2) try put the print head bottom surface touch a little cleaner or water 1-2 hrs, if you can take out the print head unit. still not fixed for some case that should change the print head unit.

Discontinue the use of color ink cartridges permanently

Try holding the stop/reset button down for 10-12 seconds. This should cancel the cartiidges out that you are not using...also click on printer box properties (via control panel) and select print "grayscale" can also manually adjust how dark you want the print to be....apply

My Canon PIXMA MP830 all-in-one is saying "the type of printhead is incorrect, install the correct printhead."

The cartrige is what holds the ink, the printhead is the device that puts the ink onto the paper.

So if your out of ink, then you need a new cartridge, if you have a new cartridge and you are having issues printing good quality, then you may need a new printhead.

you can get the ink here:

printhead is about 49.95

Hope this helps!
