Question about Sony StylePro SDM-S73/B 17" LCD Monitor

2 Answers

Turns off I bought a monitor on E-Bay recieved it today and plugged it in and it came on, literally for a second , I saw the screen and it went out. I tried it again turned it on saw the screen and it turned right back off. If it's something simple I'll try and fix it myself if not I have a dipute already going with them on recieving something that was broken. Thanks!

Re: turns off

I had the same problem with that model of lcd panel, the problem I found was the VR was defective, labeled VR2 on the power board assembly. I resoldered the connections to the VR and it's working fine now.

Re: turns off

You bought a monitor with a bad inverter board or CCFL backlights that are drawing to much current. This is a typical problem with many LCD screens after a few years of use. It is repairable but requires skill and knowledge of this type of circuit. If it is an HP F1703 or 1503 it may just be a cold solder joint. Supply the make and model and I will be able to be more helpful. Some of these inverters are easy to fix others very difficult.

My monitor is a dell 2000 flat screen 20.1" turns

This is a backlight problem. The picture is there but there is no light from behind the LCD screen. It could be due to faulty capacitors, which are easy to replace. It could be a faulty Inverter transformer, which is harder to fix but he backlight controller board can usually be replaced at a reasonable price. If you have soldering experience you may be able to replace the faulty capacitors - look for capacitors with bulging tops.
Repalcing the inverter board in a job for someone with electronics experience. You can buy a universal inverter board for about £15 to £20 from e-bay.
20 inch monitors can be bought for about £100 to £150 so you need to decide whether it is economical to repair.

I've had my monitor for years with no problems. Today, when I turned on my computer, the monitor flickered. Then the screen went black, and the power button began blinking (green). When I turned it off...

A couple of things to check. First make sure that all the connections are in place. That is, the one at the PC and the one on the back of the monitor. Second - Make sure that the video card is seated correctly in the PC. Third - Replace the monitor cable. Fourth - Check with another monitor, if possible.

Monitor blacks out after few seconds

Since you opened up the PC the first thing to do would be to make sure the graphics card (if it is a standalone card) is seated properly. Remove it, blow out any dust, and re-install it. If that does not fix the problem, or if the graphics are built into the PC, try getting a cheap video card (or borrow one from a friend) and that should fix the problem, since you have ruled out the monitor as the problem.

Also, it could be a problem with the power supply. I'd chase down the graphics card side first though. If that doesn't work, try the same procedure with the power supply.

Note: I have run into instances where an AGP slot got "zapped" by someone opening the case and not taking proper static precautions, so be careful, always unplug the PC and ground yourself to the case before touching anything. If you try a video card you know is functioning and it still doesn't work, pick up a PCI graphics card and see if that works.
