Windows XP and higher detect automatically the usb HDD drive. However, if the system is XP and did not detect please install all the system utility or drivers enclosed in your system specifically the chipset and the usb driver. if this not work at all please try this last oprion:

when starting the system simultaneously press "F2" or "Delete" to go to bios setup;

In bios setup you need to "load bios setup default" and then press "F10" to save an exit.

If thesame problems occur then may be you should reinstall the windows.

In case your system is windows 98 you need to install the USB hard drive driver.

You connected the usb had drive , and if it had an external power source it was on ???

ok right click on mycomputer
choose hardware
choose device manager
right click anything on the tree view and click scan for hardware changes.. Windows Xp should automatically detect and install it..

If you got vista, Right click computer and choose device manager,, right click anything on the tree view and click scan for hardware changes,, windows vista should install it automatically

verify your usb cable is good
check if your device requires an external power source and verify that it is connected..

connect it to another computer to see if it working

IF ALL THE ABOVE FAILS THE UNIT IS NO GOOD..,, you could try changing the harddrive inside it but i would have been wanting my money back or insurance since it could have been damaged while shipping..

The usb part it broke and I was told that I need an enclosure sata but I bought one but i't didn't work. I want to know how can I find the enclosure for the HDD

If you have purchased a new enclosure and put your hard disk inside, then it is most likely that your computer needs that new sata harddisk to be defined in the Disk Management. When you plugged in the enclosure to the computer's USB port, RIGHT click on the Computer or My Computer, then select Manage. On the Computer Management window, click on Disk Management from the left pane. It will show the list of harddisk/partitions on the right. Look for any undefined disk; that should be the sata hard disk in your enclosure; right click on it from the right and assign a drive letter to it.

Should you need further assistance, please let me know. Thank you for using FixYa.

The computer should see drives plugged into a USB port but might not know what they are.
If the computer gives no indication after you plug in a devise check the USB cable.
Try the following 1. Go to start 2. Go to the control panel. 3 Click Add new hardware and follow the Wizard instructions.

My external hardisk is showing in device manager but it is not showing in disk manager

**Turn your computer off, then unplug the USB cable and then the power to the drive. Restart you computer, plug the power into the hard drive, wait 10 seconds and then plug the USB into the computer. This clears the hard drive buffer. See if the drive shows up in disk management. Before formating, turn off your antivirus. **
**1. Test your drive on another pc
2. Check your bios settings

The best option would be to purchase an external enclosure for your hard drive. Once inserted and connected to the enclosure you will be able to connect your hard drive to your pc/mac via a usb cable.

Hope this helps!!

The Coolmax adapter is an USB hard drive adapter that can connect various types hard drives to your computer. This is used for testing and and transferring data to and from hard drives connected to the computer via the computer's USB port.

This Coolmax USB hard disk adapter can connect a 2.5-, 3.5- and 5.25-inch IDE or SATA hard disk to a PC. The black adapter box connects the hard disk, while the secondary power plug/adapter powers the drive. In the case of smaller notebook or SATA disks, the power cable is plugged directly into the adapter (as opposed to straight into the IDE hard disk).
The red USB cable, meanwhile, can be used to power hard disks directly from the host PC's bus via another USB port.

Connect the hard drive to the adapter as detailed above, power up your computer and plug the Coolmax USB cable into the conputer's USB port. The computer will detect and see this as an external drive, most likely as a E drive (the next drive letter that is available). Click on this drive and open to open the folder/s where your data is stored then select the folder/s and/or data and copy them, then open the hard drive on the computer and paste the folder/s and/or files onto the new hard drive.
