My laptop is running slow

If your problem is that your computer is very slow and you have upgraded your memory to the maximum, then you should concentrate on cleaning up and optimising the Windows file system.

Download and install the following utility programs that can help you to improve the performance of your computer.

Advanced System Care Free - run the Deep Care option of this utility.
DiskMax - run a Detailed Scan and let it clean up all profiles, updates, cache etc.
Smart Defrag - run a Defrag and Fast Optimize
CCleaner - use this to compliment the above plus use the Tools Uninstall option to remove any unwanted software programs, browser tool bars etc. Also use the Tools Startup option to disable any of the programs being started on every boot that don't need to be, i.e. things like QuickTime, Adobe Reader etc.

One of the easiest methods of determining what memory your computer has and what upgrades you can install is to go to the Crucial Memory web site and use their Crucial System Scanner Tool, this will try to detect exactly what make and model your system is, and from this advise both what the currently installed memory is, and show compatible memory upgrades for your system.

Dell computer.5 yrs.old. Very, very, slow. What can be done? Have dial up internet service. Also, what does memory upgrade mean?

Hi,

There's nothing you can do about your internet speed, dial up is dial up and is known to be slow. If you want fast internet then you would need broadband.

A memory upgrade would speed up the overall performance of the PC. For example: the computer may take 5 minutes to fully boot up and programs taking time to launch. This would not fully resolve but help it to be more responsive.

A memory upgrade is always recommended by me. I expect that your computer can be probably maxed out to 2GB of memory.

There a few things that slow your computer the way you described.
  1. You need memory on the hard drive that your Operating system is on. I would say 25% or more.
  2. Clear your temporary Internet, cookies and cache from you web browser (IE, FireFox, Opera, Ect)
  3. To many thing running in the background, if you are comfortable with computers (you can use "msconfig" to turn extra programs off)
  4. Defrag your hard drives
  5. As much memory as you can will always help.
I hope this helps.

Upgrade ram on HP LAPTOP COMPAQ NX9010

Ok, so you just got more Hard disk space, or a new bigger Hard disk. Of course you need t upgrade the Ram memory. This computer supports Ram memory up to 1 Gb with a max frequency of 266Mhz. You probably have 256Mb or 512Mb of Ram Memory. You can go to any computer store and get it upgraded. It shouldn't be expensive. But don't forget :

Use this tyoe of RAM: DDR SDRAM (266 MHz), Upgradeable to 1GB

By the way, even after the upgrade, I advise you to run a Defrag of your Hard Disk and clean all your temp files.
There is a free and easy software to clean all temp and internet temp files: Ccleaner.

Pc is slow and crashes all the time

Hi, if i understand your PC is running slow and craching. ok there could be coursed by a few things but lets do the most probable ones first.

1 - RAM, if you go to the start menu and right click "my computer" in XP or "computer" in vista then properties under memory there will be somethink that says ****GB of Ram ( * being numbers). if you r running vista this should be 2GB or 1GB min. if XP 1GB will run well. if your RAM is not this high then you have to upgrade it. if you still have your manual some times they have the spesifecations at the back and you can find out the max RAM your PC will take and what type it will take. if you dont have the manual you can find this information out by just typing into google eg "dell 2400 spesifications or RAM, etc". when you know what RAM you need then just us google to find the cheapes place to buy. again your manual should tell you how to put it if not you should be able to find it on google.

2 - removing any unwanted software from your PC does speed it up, you can also try defraging your PC - right click C drive properties defrag is under one of the tabs.

3 - Spyware some times spyware can slow your PC down make sure you have an up to date spyware scanner and run a scan.

good luck

1gb would be the minimum I would run. 2-4gb would be ideal. Vista is a memory and resource hog. Please, upgrade RAM asap! You will enjoy your computer so much more.

To slow

Computer slowdowns have several factors.

How much memory do you have?

If its 256 or below, try adding or upgrading it to 512 mb or more. Having insufficient memory causes your computer to take some space of your hard disk as a substitute, which is a lot slower than the memory ram.

Also check how much space is available on your hard disk. About 15% of the hard disk space must be freed to prevent slowdown.

Use the Disk Cleanup tool to clean some unneeded files. Go to My Computer, then right-click the drive you want to clean up, then click Properties, and click Disk Cleanup.

Try also to defrag your files to lessen the time for the access arm of your hard disk to search/read a file. To defrag your hard disk (or other storage device), go to My Computer, then right-click the drive you want to defrag, click on Properties, then tools, and click Deframent now. Analyze first so you will know if you should defrag the volume, then defrag if necessary. Do this every month to prevent too much fragmentation of files.

Scan for virus and spyware, becuase most of them take hard disk space, memory and have high CPU usage, thus making your system slow even there is no program running. For free anti virus, try AVG. For anti-spyware, try SpyBot S&D.

Also make sure that your computer is properly ventilated. Heat could also limit the performance of your computer.
