Scanner seems to jam when faxing, scanning or coppying

When I try to scan, copy or fax, the machine makes a load growl/whir and says to cycle the power to reset

When using document feed for scanning or faxxing there is a whirring/growling noise from inside the machine. This will be accompanied by an error message on the printer display "Scanner failure. Turn power off then on."

When using the document feed tray to copy a series of originals everything works correctly.

P.S. I did clean all of the rubber drive wheels. It seems to me that there is a faulty gear drive or spindle on the scanner carriage assembly.

    I'd appreciate any help!

    Growling printer disabling operation

I had the same problem but the growling/whirring noise is coming from the scanner, not the document feeder. The scanner will scan about half the document before getting the noise and the scanner error message. I removed the scanner bed but I did not locate any possible problems.

I had the same problem with mine. Ended up contacting HP got replacement machine. It ended up doing the same thing. Sent back & got another replacement machine & (knock on wood) its been working GREAT. Of course mine was still under warranty.

I have the same motor problem during faxing only and was told by HP that they have never heard of this problem. Ifound a replacement motor (used) online for $152+ but ended up buying a refurbished printer thru the HP upgrade. I'm not happy with HP after reading your comments about the same issues and will tell them that.

I have the same problem when using the feeder only in all three functions. Whirring sound appears to be and aborting problem from the feeder?

  • Anonymous Apr 08, 2008

    Same problem. Out of waranty.

Power Fail when sending fax from document feed. I can receive faxes and send from the manual loading on the flat glass panel. But when I try to send from the document feeder it will dial the number and start to pull the document into the reader, but just before it starts sending, there is a loud whirling sound and I get a "Power Fail" light and the unit freezes up and I have to turn it off and restart to get the document out of the feeder.

same problem: scanner jams with the growl/whir and power must be turned off to reset. does not seem to be a problem with the document feeder.

Cant send nor receive faxes

dear sir, kindly follow the below instructions
Instructions
  1. Ensure that all cables are securely connected. First, make sure that the printer cable connecting your computer to your printer is connected securely. Then, make sure that the power cord is inserted into a wall outlet. Try your print job again after you have ensured that all cables are properly connected.

  2. Clear a paper jam if your printer is not responding or you are receiving a "Paper Jam" error message on your printer. To clear a jam, first open the rear output door by pushing down on the two levers on each side of the door. Opening the rear door simply makes it easier to clear a jam. Open the top cover on the front of the printer by pressing the release button on the right side of the printer. Locate the paper jam and use two hands to gently remove the paper jam. Try your print, scan, fax or copy job again.

  3. Clear stored or saved faxes if you are having trouble sending or receiving faxes. Old faxes may be stuck in the fax queue, which may be causing the printer to not respond. To remove stored faxes, press the "Menu" button on the printer and select "Fax Functions." Then select "Clear Saved Faxes." Wait for the queue to clear and try your fax job again.

  4. Remove paper from the automatic document feeder (ADF) input tray if your scan job is coming out crooked. The ADF input tray can only hold up to 50 sheets at a time. If there are more than 50 sheets in the input tray, the output may appear skewed. Try your scan job again after removing the paper.

  5. Adjust your computer monitor's display settings if your scanned image is not an accurate representation of the original image. This can be done in the "Control Panel" in Windows. Set the settings to the highest possible resolution and try your scan job again.

  6. Perform a power cycle on your printer if the previous steps were unsuccessful. To do this, turn off your printer, then unplug it from the wall. Wait a few minutes and plug the printer back in. Try your print, scan, fax or copy job again.

take care..thank you

Receiving faxes alright, people receiving faxes from us are getting an all black page

Your document scanner has died. Meaning that the row of LED's that light up to scan the documents you are trying to fax are not lighting up. The result is a scanned document that is read as all black. Make a copy....you will get a black sheet because the same process is used to scan the document when making copies.
It might be time for a new fax machine as these machines have become so cheap to buy new that I doubt you could get this machine repaired for what you can just buy a new one for.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Black copies being received

Your image scanner is bad. Try making a copy....if it comes out black but your incoming faxes are fine then your image scanner is bad. You can also print a report from the machine and it should come out fine.
The image scanner is the part that scans your originals before faxing them out or making a copy. There is a light bar that lights up when scanning. Either that light bar(l.e.d. array) has gone bad or the scanner itself is bad. If this is the case it is probably going to cost more to fix than the machine is worth. You could buy a new machine for what it would cost to fix.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

When you send a fax, the other person only gets lines on there copy, not the paper that i faxed

Make a copy with your fax machine. If your scanner is bad you should have a similar problem making copies. The same scanner is used to make a copy as is used to scan and send a fax. If the copy comes out bad your scanner is either dirty or bad. If you can see your copy but it just has a few lines running vertically up and down the page then you need to clean the scanner glass. This is a small strip of glass in the port where you feed it your originals.
Good Luck

HP Officejet Pro L7680 All in One - cannot send faxes - keeps jamming and says "scanner failure unable to scan copy or send a fax. Turn the power off and on and try again" I have done this several times...

The scanner is the problem, the scanner is the real bright light that comes on to scan the orginal document. Does your Scanner lamp come on? mite be burned out? stating scanner failure, doses your scanner move when it scannes the document? Motor or cicruit board that control scanner mite be bad, check the scanner "Home " position sensor maybe the scanner board and main board don't know where the scanner is phyiscal when it goes thur its routine.

Will not scan

With the power off & the machine unplugged, remove the scan glass & move the scanner a few inches from "home" position. Plug in & turn on machine. Does the scanner return to home position? If not, you either have a bad scanner motor or scanner cable. I'll look for you to post the results of the scanner drive test.
