Question about Sharp R-316FS Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Jenn-Air Microwave M169B 11 years old.

When I press start the microwave works for a few seconds and turns off. Getting worse by the day. (Yesterday, it would run for 20 seconds, now only 2 or so.) I've reset power at the circuit breaker, checked the door interlocks, etc. Everything appears fine. Ideas? All door latches and sensors seem fine.

Update: I know now that its the START/STOP membrane switch that's the issue. Scotch packaging tape over that section of the panel, over a separator will do the trick as it did on a washing machine a few years ago for me.

You should be able to get a replacement keypad, and that's not a hard job for a DIYer.

If you're interested, post your correct brand and model and I'll give you a more specific suggestion.

(Your post subject says Jenn-Air M169B put it's posted under Sharp R-316FS so I'm not sure which you have).

I have a Jenn air microwave and it just quit the other day while I was warming water. It is about 7 yr old. Is it worth fixing?

I recommend replacing it, as you said it is 7 years old and prices have dropped on the new microwave ovens making it more attractive to buy. The repairs with parts and labor will approach the cost of a new one.

Jenn-Air JMC7000 Microwave Stopped working

So it's dead? (No display, no inside lights, no beeps?)

A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the thermostat to open. When it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

If it's random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or fuse holder.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.
