Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 ... Problem

Comment by Guest, posted on Jan 04, 2008 For the first time in 8 months, the Maxtor drive does not show up in the My Computer window on my Windows XP pc when I boot up. I have checked the properties and clicked Troubleshoot, yet the USB device controller lists this as an Unknown Device, and does not recognize the storage drive at all. In the troubleshoot window, it kept asking me to reinstall the software driver, but no driver came with the Maxtor. Open to any and all suggestions.

Re: Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 ... Problem

Check the manufacturers website, as all drives no matter what should come with drivers of some sort. this is the most likely cause for what is wrong.

Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, after years of use my Vista machine now tells me that the USB Device isnt recognised.

However last month I found that the Maxtor is no longer recognisable to my machine. Reading through related postings on other sites it appears that Vista updates from Microsoft may be the reason why this functionality has suddenly ceased. I presume the security updates in particular may have meant that the Maxtor 3200 is also considered a potential threat. The question is who will take responsibility for resolving this issue of Maxtor 3200 users no longer being able to access their back up files via their Vista based machines. Personally I believe the onus is with Microsoft

hope this helps

Maxtor 3200 not working

Check for error code 10 in the Windows device manager. You likely have a power supply problem.

Maxtor Personal Storage Unit 3200 - Model U01E100

it makes no difference how old the drive is, unless you transfer the same amount of content everyday and can chart and predict. It  might help to wrap your mind around the actually capacity and extent of files you trasfer and use. If that drive is a 200GB....1 gigabyte is roughly 1 cd and a half. A compact disc can hold 700MB, or gauge it to like a ipod.  So if youre possibly transferring say 2GB per day, you will reach the max of the drive in 3 months?

2GB X 90 days=180GB

If you are using graphic applications, or may want to look towards a 320 GB or 500GB as things only get larger with current computers........Just 3 years ago, who knew what a gigabyte was? Now we own drive in upwards to 1TB ( terabyte ).

keep me posted..

Maxtor personal storage 3200 200 GB hard-drive does not show up in my computer

The volume partition may be failing. So your machine can see the drive but you still cannot read or write to it. I would open it and extract the drive, to eliminate whether the drive and / or enclosure is at fault.
