Question about Samsung SIR-TS160 DirecTV DTV Receiver

Off air with SIR TS160

Hi,
I have ended my contract with Direct TV but would like to use the box to capture off air HD using an antenae. Neither of my TV's have HD tuners built in and neither Direct TV or Samsung were any help. My impression is that Direct TV deactivated any funtionality of the box. Not sure how a third party company can deactivate a device for off air useage which I own. Can you shed some light on this?

Thanks

Mike

    Hi,

Thanks for your comments. It made me realize that must be a way to program around the intial dish setup. There was in fact a choice of no dish which then scanned through the off air channels. Confirming it should work gave me the info to find a solution. Not sure why Samsung themselved did not tell me this.

Hi druggist , I recently bought a Samsung SIR TS 160 unit from the Goodwill for $14.99 (no remote though) and I was very sceptical as to whether it would work but I thought what the hell it's only 15 bucks .Anyway to my surprise it works great and I do not and never have subscribed to Direct TV , I don't even have a satellite dish (am using an indoor antenae) and I get about 19 TV channels 10 of which are HDor DTV .Granted occasionally I have to move the antenae around a bit but not much . I also took my box to my friends house and he has a rooftop/outdoor antenae and there were no problems whatsoever .
I doubt Direct TV can deactivate your box in anyway ,especially for off-air programs.
Good Luck
Ted
ps my TV does not have a HD tuner either.

I want to be able to use my Digimate with antena only

Go into your set's setup menu and make sure it is set to "Antenna" rather than something else. Any flat panel TV less than ~ 3 years old will be compatible with 'over-the-air' HD broadcasts.

The antena hole input in the Converter box that where said the input source said Ant.,use a antena like a digital antena, roof antena or a rabit ear antena.Hook up ur source of the antena go in that hole. The hole input said out to tv in the Converter box,use a cable that was supply to u,came with the Converter box.Use that cable plug in the Conveter box tv hole said out to tv.The other end of that cable go to ur tv Ant. hole. Now u got it all hook up.Turn ur tv to channel 3 or 4 now u got a menu from the Converter box,go down to the highlight word said scan channels, push that highlight word.Ater the scan are finish,u will now get all the free DTV channels.

Is the rca true flat tv able to be used by putting up an antena -or will we need a convertor box ? currently we have direct tv and are thinking about canceling it and use an antena.

This model does not have a built in HD tuner (ATSC Tuner). You would need an HD antenna (that is a more recent antenna that receives UHF) and an HD converter box to get the newly broadcast HD signals.

If you are not getting any power to the box, then the power supply may need to be changed.

Hook up analog vcr to hd tv

You must have a converter box for the tv and for the vcr. Set the vcr to receive chanel 3 and set the converter box to the digital chanel you want to record. Put a splitter on the antenae out and route one to the tv converter box and one to the vcr converter box. GOOD TO GO.
