My i pod will only work if it is in a cradle or connected to the mains. as soon as you unplug it from the mains it goes dead .i have re placed the battery but still the same ?? can some one help

Well this could either be a dead battery or a dead logic board. If you feel comfortable about opening it up, you can buy both of these components off of eBay quite cheaply
So what you can do is connect the ipod to computer (Connect it to USB Port at the rear of you desktop computer and charge it). then try these steps:
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
