Followed instructions to the letter, no luck, did not help. In HKLM there was only UpperFilter, no lowerFilter.

No problem with connection, nothing shown.

Any more suggestions or send refund?

    Advise, thanks

I have tried all these things above and still can not find cd/dvd slot. I can not go to windxp, since I installed Vista first, would have to format entire PC and then reinstall, to much work right now.

Since you can't seem to solve my problem, I now request a full refund now.

Thanks anyway for all your fine efforts.

Hey, I just thought of something, I forgot.
I did try to format my C drive and then changed my mind and stopped. Could some files like system have been deleted and now I need some way to put this file back into my PC, just an idea. Let me know what you think.

Only have ONE computer, can not format and install winxp since I only have one cd rom and it will not open or close and does not show that it is installed on this computer.

So I am now in limbo, what now? Any more suggestions, or should I take PC to repairman now?

No, it does not recognize the cdrom. The leg does not turn on. I can open the cdrom if I insert a paperclip inside the small hole, then I have to ease if open by hand. I have inserted a CD inside and then pushed it closed by hand slowly. However, the cd is not reconginzed, so out of luck.

Plus the fact, could not install winxp wihout doing format to delete Visa.

    WHAT NOW ??????????????

Thanks for all your fine efforts, however nothing worked.

I am taking my computer to Computer Repair shop Monday to check out cdrom, it is not that old, so I don't think it is over the hill.

Please advise company to issue full refund to me asap.

The computer isnt recognizing your dvd burner

Apparently it seems that this is an age old fix for even XP systems. If you venture to the registry key above by doing the following steps:

  1. Click on the start menu.
  2. If this is a Vista machine in the search box type in “regedit” without the quotation marks.
  3. Maximize the HKLM and then go ahead and browse until you reach the key listed above.
  4. In the right panel you’ll see something along the lines of “UpperFilter” and “LowerFilter” you want to click on each “filter” key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Let me know if this works.

there could be another problem.. maybe you didnt connect the the dvd burner the right way..
to check that, you could follow these steps>
    1. go to my pc and right click and click on properties.
    2. go to the hardware tab
    3. click device manager
    4. then click on the icon that has the name of your pc..
    5. click on the icon scan for hardware
    6. it must appear there like if its some uninstalled and unrecognized hardware... if it doesnt appear, it means the cables arent well set up..
    7. let me know if this work..

in the pict you can take a better reference

  • Asdrubal Perez Jan 17, 2008

try this was from a previus solution..

    a. Click on Start -->
Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key

    b. Expand the
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double
clicking it (or clicking the "+" next to it.)

    c. Expand the "SYSTEM"

    d. Expand the
    "CurrentControlSet" Key

    e. Expand the "Control"

    f. Expand the "Class"

    g. Look for a key
containing the following string of letter and numbers:

    h. Highlight this key by
    left clicking once on it

    i. On the right hand side
you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters"
under the "Name" column, once you find these delete them by
right clicking on them and choosing "delete"

    j. Exit the registry by
clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the

    Reboot your computer

Make sure you're selecting the correct key.
There will be several keys that look like this one:

remember when you click it, only click it one time, just highlight it.
Then on the right hand side you should see "upper filters" and "lower

if that doesnt work, it means that it isnt well conectet to your desktop..

to make sure it is correctly installed:
PCs have primary and secondary IDE connectors on the motherboard. The
best place to hook up your DVD-ROM drive is on the channel that serves the
    CD-ROM drive.
You should find a spare connector on the wide data cable. If not,
use the cable that came with your DVD-ROM kit. If the secondary channel already
has two drives (for example, both a CD-ROM drive and a CD-RW drive), connect
the DVD-ROM drive to the free connector on the hard drive's channel.

    1. Make sure the jumper on the back of the DVD-ROM drive is set to Slave
(A). If special brackets are needed to mount the drive in your PC, attach them

    2. Slide the DVD-ROM drive into your PC's mounting bay (B), and connect the
wide data cable and the power cable to the rear of the DVD-ROM drive (C).

    3. Make
sure the colored edge (usually red) of the data cable is attached to pin 1 on
      the DVD drive connector.

    here are some references

  • Asdrubal Perez Jan 17, 2008

the next best thing to all that, is move to windows XP.. because windows vista is really lame right now... i am still using XP, and would use linux if it werent for ADOBES compatibility..

  • Asdrubal Perez Jan 18, 2008

well.. if you are writing from the computer you half formated, then the format didnt work, because it would stop working...when you do formating you clean the disk drive from lots of garbage that it has, like windows vista...
then, when you reinstall the operative system, then you could browse the internet and do lots of fun things..

and no, that doesnt have nothing to do with the cd rom.. its windows vistas fault

  • Asdrubal Perez Jan 18, 2008

if you are writing from another pc.. then i doubt windows actually i suggest to do a full format from the windows cd and then reinstall windows (preferably windows xp or ubuntu that is totally free and all its software and easy to use)

  • Asdrubal Perez Jan 18, 2008

i just still want to make something clear..
when you dont do a full format (i dont remember if you can cancel a format) the unit will lose its format and the operative system wont recognize it... and you cant format a dvd rom, you can give format to a dvd disk or a hard disk.. even usb drives and SD cards and cards of any kind

  • Asdrubal Perez Jan 18, 2008

and for putting files back.. its really hard.. you could try some programs, but they dont tend to work well and most of your files will be corrupt and not work at all...

  • Asdrubal Perez Jan 18, 2008

not yet.. just answere me these questions:
does your computer recognizes the cdrom?
when you turn on your computer does the led turns on? if it does, at that moment try to open it... then.. when that hapens, you can reinstall windows xp..

try that and then tell me if it works..

  • Asdrubal Perez Jan 18, 2008

well.. i think your cdrom is officially dead...but only if it used to work... how old is that equipment?

the next best thing to do would be replacing it..

  • Asdrubal Perez Jan 19, 2008

    so.. what have you done?

Hi this is peter i have a problem hat i nt figer out. trying to install Punch Home and Land Premium i get this-- Error 1305.Error reading From file C: Program Files\Punch! Home and Land Premium\ tool...

Hello peter4927,

An, "Error 1305" message mean that; your computer is unable to read the "Program Disc" properly.

This error can occur if your CD or DVD is damaged, dirty, or caused by dust.

This can happen, if another program is "preventing your computer from reading the "Program!"
You will also receive this error if the "Disc Drive" is damaged or dirty.
Try cleaning the "Disc" first!
"Use a Disc Cleaner, to clean the CD-ROM / DVD Drive.
Place the "Program Disc in the Disk Drive; then "Restart the Computer!"
This will have the CD, or DVD start-up {Automatically}.
Next, you can try to start the "Disc" by using the "Auto-Run."
To do so; place the 'Disc' in the "Disc Drive Tray."
Next, [right click] on the "Computer Icon" to open the 'computer window'.
Now, right click, on the Disc Drive, and select the either, "Open, Explore or {Auto-run}.
Hopefully it will start.
Repeat each action if necessary!

Is there a way I can finalize a DVD-RW so I can show films burned onto the DVD-RW?

You have not pointed out what type of program are you using for DVD authoring. The option to finalize the disc is usually provided when you start burning.

I have an alternate solution for you which is easier. You can use the Windows DVD maker available in Vista Home Premium. This way you will not have to manually finalize the disc; it will take care of it itself.

Remember to install codecs such as k-lite basic coded pack for trouble free work with different formats. Then run DVD maker from the start menu. A tutorial can be accessed here.

Note that DVDs created by DVD maker can be played on most DVD players and on computer as well.

Your HP computer should come with Quickplay, open the program, click on DVD, on the upper right hand corner on the left side of the rectangular box there should be an icon that looks like a wheel or a gear, click on that and click on Updates, should solve your problem.

Lg rc797t dvd drawer will not close consistently

I have a Compaq Presario desktop running XP Media Center. The DVD tray would open on power up, and kept openinig when pushed shut.

I discovered that the tray would frequently remain closed when I held open the flap (the flap with the open button). A few days after discovering this, I got to add some more tracks to my MP3 player - I only mention this intermediate stage in case it is material in curing the problem, as the next thing that happened was a power failure whilst the PC was on. Since then, the CD/DVD drive has behaved perfectly. I did have a temporary problem with AVG INternet Security being unable to load the necessary DLLs to run correctly in MS Outlook 2003, even complaining of a corrupt installation, but this dissappeared after a proper restart and AVG update.

Compaq users: try holding the flap open when you attempt to close the tray.
Generally: with PC running and all applications closed, switch the power off at the wall socket.

First of all I'm running Vista HP SP1. I put a disc (CD or DVD)in either of my LG CD/DVD 20x drives and try to view the disc by clicking on "My Computer" and then the "drive" that...

This could be several things, most likey it's a compat issue with Vista being daffy. Check with the mfg of the drive, see if there are updates for vista or if they should be running on vista. Check with microsoft, see if there are patches for the drive. Also it could just be the drive not master/slaved properly or it could be having mechanical issues.

I hate my computer!

No, this doesn't cost unless you sign up for Premium Assistance.
  1. Remove the disc from the drive.
  2. Look at the top of the disc (or game box). Verify whether it is a CDROM or DVD-ROM.
  3. If it is a DVD-ROM, verify the drive on your computer that you are inserting the disc into is capable of reading DVD-ROMs.
  4. Go to My Computer and verify which drive letter is the drive you'll be inserting the disc into.
  5. Insert the disc.
  6. Wait 20 seconds. If the disc doesn't automatically start up, go to step 7.
  7. Open My Computer and double click the drive containing the disc.
  8. If My Computer now shows the disc contents, find the most likely ".exe" file and run it.
