The problem is 90% a dead laser or 10% a weak spindle motor.
If you have the time and patients. you could buy a new laser
and install it yourself. Its really not that hard to do, plus you'll
save some money . Or you could have shop swap it out for
70.00-80.00 some times less . if you need more info ,ask

Trying using canned air to clean it out. the laser could have gottne dust on it or some sort of smudge as well. in that case you need to take the x-box apart and clean the laser very carefully with a q-tip and alchohol. the motor could be shot too. if thats the case you'll want to replace it. don't use the same motor because they **** and have a very short life.
This is a hardware problem, you would have to call Microsoft to get repairs done to it. Here is the number for the Microsoft Customer Service 1-800-4MY-XBOX.
Hope this helps!
Well to do that you would have to get technical and open that thing up i don't recommend it. get professional to do it go to game stop or something. to get rid of all your problems sell it and buy a PS3 (my opinion)
SOURCE: my xbox plays cds/movies but not games. what do i do?
this is a problem the microsoft has been working on ... remove any disc from the tray> unplug it from all power the plug it back in> open the disc tray .. leave it open for a little while like 10-15 seconds .. then put the game in and it should work .. if it does not however you have one of the defected disc trays and you'll need to get it repaired by microsoft .. i know its not what you want to hear but hey at least they will fix it free of charge =]

Forget everything you have read.
There are 3 reasons why your drive has failed.
1 Most common is a weak or dead laser . Their cheap and not
hard to install yourself . I have never seen a dirty laser , this
is due to the high RPM of the drive 99% of the dust is swept
aside.
2 The spindle motor has seized up or to stiff to spin up.
You can easily determine this by turning it by hand or
listening for it to spin up when you place a disk in the
console.
3 The worm gear motor pin bearing is worn . This will
normalize make a whining sound when it trys to seek
game data from the disk
Remedy for problem # 1 is to replace the laser.
Remedy for problem # 2 is to replace the drive and put
the old drives P.C. board in the new drive.
and the same for problem # 3
