Ductless heater shutting down

My Rinnai heater shuts off every once and a while (between 1 - 4 days) and the Lo 60 64 lights blink. If I push the on/off button to turn it off and then on again the heater fires up and works again until it shuts down again day(s) later. I was told by Rinnai that the spark ignition system (gap) may need to be reset. I would like to do this myself and save the expensive service call for what seems like a simple fix. Any suggestions?

Re: Ductless heater shutting down

There is a small wiring harness that goes from the main board down to the sparker board at the very bottom of the heater. Disconnect this harness and reconnect making sure all pins and contacts make good connection. If it continues, replace the wire harness. Also make sure the outlet that the heater is plugged into is a grounded outlet. Stray voltage can interrupt the thinking of this unit.

If all connections are good and the unit is grounded, you are probably looking at replacing the sparker board. I do have these parts and would be more than happy to send them to you for a donation.

Rinnai energysaver 556 blinking

Hi jmsocr2315,

If my description of what your heater is doing please read through to the end.

The heater is turned on and a room temperature is selected.
You can hear the noise of a small fan start, which shortly after the heater starts.
After a short period of time the heater stops and the red led begins to flash and shuts itself down.

This type of heater has a balanced flue, which means it draws air in one pipe and exhausts it out another.
Have the balanced flue checked for blockages, the problem will most likely be in the flue pipe which draws the outside cool air into the heater and not the flue pipe which blows out the hot air.
it may be full of cob webs or something else which restricts the air flow to the heater.
A service person can perform a quick test to prove the above theory. At the rear of the heater there are two pipes, one is an insulated metal pipe and the other is plastic pipe.
Disconnect the plastic pipe from the flue box and restart the heater.
If the heater runs normally this will confirm that there is a blockage.

Have a rinnae royal gas lok heater. Cant start it after gas was shut off. How do you get the ignition to work and start the pilot light again

When the gas was turned OFF, air got in the line(s) and created an air pocket. This air will need to purged from the system, before the heater will light. It only the shutoff valve on the gas line to the heater was turned OFF, it will be easier to purge. If your Rinnai heater has manual ignition rather than electronic ignition. Holding the control down in the Pilot position, will eventually purge the air. If you have electronic ignition, continually trying to light the unit will do the same thing, but take longer to accomplish. Consulting your Rinnai will also help you with this situation.

Hope this helps you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

Our Rinnai Energysaver 556 is set to the highest temperature, and while it's working the LO light and the Filter light are consistently blinking. Then it will shut off after 1/2 hour or so, and the 68...

The LO/Filter light blinking is an indication of Flame Failure . It means the unit had a flame and then lost the flame signal to the PCB . Have the incoming gas supply checked for proper operating range . Also have the flame rod /burner areas checked for debris/sooting/dirty flame rod/ etc...Spiders have a way of getting inside the burner areas and misdirecting the gas flow in the burners . This is common on units that have been sitting dormant for long periods .
The 68/Filter/On lights blinking are an indication of an "overheating " situation . Inspect the overall unit inside the cabinet for any dirty issues(pet hair/dust/dirt/gasket integrity/etc...) .
These procedures should be done by a qualified service technician due to liabilities involving gas fired products !

Heater not heating at the right temperature?

Your heater is only a 21K BTU heater. It is not meant to heat a whole house. We don't know how big you house is, however a 21K heater will not heat 4 or 5 rooms. The best you could expect out of a Rinnai 556 would be to heat a couple of rooms that are next to each other. You will never be able to heat rooms in your house that have doors or are down the hall a ways.

Good luck,

Tom Hawkins

I have a Rinnai Energysaver 556F

The heater will have some error codes stored in it. To retrieve them get an assistant to write down the codes as you see them. They come quickly. OK to get the codes, push down on the Economy button and the up arrow and down arrow at the same time. Hold for three seconds. It will take three fingers to do this. Once you get the error codes, look in your owners manual to diagnose.

Rinnai EnergySaver 556F Heater flashes

I'm picking up a faint propane scent when the heater is completely turned off. When I turn the heater on it lights fine so I don't suspect it's the pilot light. Is this an issue with the installation of the fuel line, or could it still be the pilot? Any ideas on troubleshooting the source?
