Re: tape is not threading

Hello haroon2008,

Check to see if the gear or wheel is engaging the capstan.

This more then likely is your problem.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Anyone know what error 20 means?

Tape cannot thread probably due to bad loading belt or gear.

Error code 09-028

Servo and tape path system error.
0 : Mode cannot be identified, or mode identification is
not necessary.
2 : Threading motor/FG/sensor
8 : Abnormal current detected.

If it’s not just a simple tape jam, then you have a problem with the loading mechanism. The best solution is to take the deck to a service center.

Vcr keeps turning off by itself. can't load tape.

Take the top cover off & have a look at the deck mechanism to see if there is anything obstructing the tape from loading properly. Put a tape in & watch closely to see if it draws the tape in, lowers it down & then threads the tape around the heads. If this is not the case & there is nothing in the mechanism preventing this action then look to see if the head drum is spinning. There may be a fuult with the loading motor if the tape is not being pulled into the machine. If there is a fault with the deck then it is best to take it to a repair centre.

Tape hanging up and will not record.

There is a threading arm that has gummed up inside the unit. I suspect that the tape is not being loaded correctly. This is a common problem with the Sony units and requires the removal of that loading arm to remove gummed up grease. Once that is completed, the unit will function correctly. Please note that the height of this swing arm is critical to the correct loading of the tape. I would not suggest you attempt this repair because the tape height adjustment needs to be exact. A local shop should be able to resolve this for you with NO parts required.

Error f03

I think this has to do with the motor that loads the tape.

Is it having trouble either loading or ejecting the tape? If so, then something is probably awry in that mechanism. Take the top cover off and watch a load or eject operation. If tape isn't fully loaded, and tape threaded, then an error condition will result, as will be the case if it won't eject. Causes include a broken piece of the load mechanism (also called cassette carriage or carriage mechanism), broken or cracked gear. If the mechanism is gear driven, timing is critical, just being out of time one tooth will foul things up. There are often marks on the gears which must line up exactly in a particular mode as specified in manufacturer service literature. Most VCRs since the early '90s are disposeable, very prone to breakage, in contrast to early units which were made like tanks, costing $400 plus.

Flashing "2" on VCR front panel.

Hi Oshaman. I have dealt with many VCR's and would like to ask you a few questions before diagnostics. How exactly did you get the tape out of the machine ? There are several tape threading gears involved, and if you accidentally made one of them skip a few teeth while forcing the tape deck up the "position" switch will send erroneus signals to the tape threading position switch/ controller. Was the tape rolled around the capstan/pinch roller ? Did you have to force the tape loading tray up to extract the tape ? Feel free to email me. Happy Holidays.
