Problems with attachments once they open

When I click on an attachment, it automatically downloads. Then when I click on it to open it, the file shows up with a bunch of other text. This happens also when I open the program(Word) first and then open the attachment thru the program. The attachments open fine on my pc but not on the mac. I need them on the mac. The version of Word is Office v.X.  Can you help please?

Re: problems with attachments once they open

Are you talking about attatchment from EMAIL?

Betcha you have a lot of email.. Force your email program to compress it's folders. Perhaps even Rebuild its folders.
If all fails, get a newer or at leasst fresh install of your email
Try to find where it hides your mail first and make a copy, in case everything goes to heck.

Gluck.. (hmmmm I smell Eudora)

How do i send email with a large attachment from my imac

Attachments to email should be less than 10mb.
Your ISP sets the limit.
Open an email and get it ready to go.
Put cursor where you want the attachment to sit on the page.
Drag your file to be attached, from the Desktop to the Email window & drop. Then clik send.
For larger attachments:
Use the free DropBox to share files with friends. You place files to be shared in the Dropbox Folder which shows in the top menu of a Mac. Very simple to use, once set up.

Automator Basics
The Apple Automator application allows Mac OS users to automate the repetitive computer tasks by creating a workflow. A workflow is a series of actions that will be executed one after the other when executed. An action is the simplest unit of the Automator like Copy to Clipboard By combining actions from different applications in the drag and drop interface of the Automator, you can create your own applications and plug ins. Here is how it works.
  1. Open from the Applications folder.
  2. You will see 4 panes: Library, Action and Help on the left; the workflow canvas on the right.
  3. You can search for actions by typing in the edit box located on the top left corner of the application.
Create a plug in for sending mail from the Finder

  1. Press [Command] + [N] to create a new workflow.
  2. Select Finder in the Library list.
  3. Select Get Selected Finder items.
  4. Drag it to the workflow canvas on the right.
  5. Now select Mail application in the Library List.
  6. Select Get New Mail.
  7. Drag it to the right window, below the Get Selected Finder Items box.
  8. Select the Add Attachment to Front Message from the Action pane and drop it as the last action on the workflow.
  9. You have just completed your workflow.
  10. Click the Run button on the top left corner of the screen.
  11. The Mail app will pop up. Close it and go back to the Automator application
  12. Open File > Save as a Plug-in. Type a name for the Automator plug-in.
  13. Open the Finder window and click on a file that you would like to send as an email attachment.
  14. From the context menu([Ctrl] + click), select Automator and then choose the workflow you just created.
  15. If you have your mail account set-up, you just need to type in the details of who you want to send the message to. You can now send attachments directly from your Finder window.

The sharing sites to watch video directly on Internet video clips are very popular. Most often if we need just a MP3 audio of a Youtube video, we use to download the video and than we extract the MP3 with some softwares. If only the audio portion of a video you want, such as an excerpt from a concert or music clip of your favorite band, you can easily retrieve it.
The free and VDownloader will allow you to automatically download music from a YouTube video and convert to MP3 format. You can then listen as you like on your computer, copy it to your portable media player, burn to CD Audio, etc..

Configuring VDownloader:
VDownloader is in the form of a ZIP archive that you can download for free . After downloading, you must unzip the archive and then run the Easy set.
First download VDownloader and save it on your computer.
Click Extract all files.
In the wizard that appears, click Next.
Once extraction is complete, click Finish.
The folder containing the installation program VDownloader is open. Double click the file vdownloader_setup.exe.
Click the Run button.
Select your preferred language and click OK.
Click the Next button.
Select the I understand and accept the terms of the license agreement and click Next twice.
Uncheck CreateAuctions Channel Desktop Icon and click Next.
Check the option Do not install TuneUp Utilities is selected then click Next.
Click the Install button.
When copying files over, finally click the Finish button.

While downloading a ''this attachment may contain an application'' message appears. When the document is opened an invitation to sign up for ''iWork'' or ''Mail'' appears. The attachment will not display....

If you aren't sure the source for this message, please dont open, since it might be a phishing/trojan/virus that could attack your computer.

and if you are sure that it is from trusted source, just confirm with him/her once again about the attachment because the message seems like some hacking trojan.

Here is the easiest solution if you're using the "mail" application on your mac.
Put the files you want to send on your desktop, then open the message that you are trying to send while still being able to see your desktop with the files you want to attach.. now drag those files onto the open message. that should work.
If you're not using mail.. message me back. also If this doesn't work, tell me what are the file extensions your using as well as file sizes and the email client you're using.
hope that helps

Why can't I select the download location of EVERY attachment in Yahoo Mail?

Safari has only the one option for file download location but you can right click the file you want to download and select the "download as" from the pop up list then it will give you an additonal option there.

what type of file is it that you are trying to open, sometimes you will see gobbledegook if your computer doesn't have the right program to handle a PC word processing and your mac doesn't have Microsoft Office installed. It also could happen with other type of file such as an image, video etc.

Open office can open a number of word documents:

Gimp for macintosh opens a lot of image files:

also if you know what type of file it is, try adding an extension to it by placing a dot then follow it by typing the filetype. For a word document type in .doc for instance

Music files.

First you should compress the file, most email clients like yahoo and gmail have a file transfer limitation. You want to make sure the file is an mp3 ( unless quality is needed, like a voice over or professional recording proof..then you should consider FTP ) drag the file onto your desktop from the Music/ITunes/ITunes Music onto your desktop, or you can drag it right out of the ITunes player.

Then locate your CONTROL key. It should be 3 keys to the left of the space bar. CTRL. You want to press the ctrl key while you click on it-if you're on a desktop or using a double click mouse, then RIGHT click on it. Both will bring up a small menu from which you should see CREATE ARCHIVE OF "FILE NAME.MP3" What this does, is creates a "zip" file or a compress archive of the file. You then make that item and attachment in your email, therefore having it on your desktop will make it easy to find. When your'e done, delete the archive file, your original in your MUSIC folder will not be affected.

Hope this helps.
