Fridge cycling cool to warm

Purchased a used ge from a storage unit, we didn't notice till we got it home that it does not have the original factory hinges, the water line to the door had been cut and just a regular fridge door hinge put in it's place however the freezer seems to work fine the fridge side will cool get very cold then seem to warm up to room temp, there is a gap between the seal and body at the bottom of the doors would this contribute to the problem? don't want to sink money into new hinges if there is a problem somewhere else

Yes, you should not have a gap. It is allowing warm air to circulate in ref.

Why do freezer and refrigerator get warm and then cool down again and repeat the cycle every few days?


check fan operation if fan not working will cause icing and the air wont pass thru causing temperature to rise in unit than defrost cycle removes some of icing and unit will work to cool down till iced over --other is defrost timer damaged or electrical connection problem

DEFROST PROBLEM
The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can't flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won't turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it's bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it's in the defrost mode.

If you have a defrost timer you can test it. It can be located under the fridge behind the kick panel on the front. Some are in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

If you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located in the fridge with the controls in some models and on the back in others.

I found the refrigerator not cooling. I unplugged the unit, vacuumed the coils, plugged unit back in. The unit began to cool and kept it's temperature for 18 hours. I then noticed it began to cool back...

If you changed the defroster. you know how to take the top apart. Take the fan cover off there is a lover on the cover should be factory set but sometimes they come loose and stop the air from going to the bottom. while you there look to see if it has ice in it. If it dose. the drain may be stopped up.

How to set the defrost timer on a KitchenAid Side-by-side frig?


It doesn't and shouldn't matter as all fridges with a mechanical defrost timer will run through a complete refridgeration and defrost cycle according to the manufacturer's factory design.

It doesn't have to correlate to your local time, since all defrost cycles for self-defrosting units operate based on the manufacturer's specs for how often the unit needs to go into a defrost cycle to prevent ice build up in the freezer.

Your fridge will adjust properly, once it gets cold enough and begins the specified operation and pre-determined cooling and defrost cycling.

GE side by side - upper freezer warming once a week then freezing


Had the same problem. Bottom of freezer was about the right temp but the upper part was way too warm. Fridge side was fine. Ice maker stopped making ice - it wasn't broken, but it won't run through its cycle if the temp is too high. Cubes already in storage hopper melted and water refroze as it ran to lower, colder part of fridge. Problem: Fan controller for freezer compartment was faulty. The fan itself was fine. Fix: GE replaced the main circuit board that controls everything on this model, including the freezer compartment fan. Once that was done, temp returned to normal, ice maker is happy again. The board had undergone several revisions from the factory installed one (could tell this by comparing the part number on the old and new boards - they increment it when they revise it.) Bad news: the part/labor were expensive and of course failed after the warranty ran out. Good news: the board is now guaranteed for 5 yrs. (Why wouldn't the factory-installed board ALSO be good for five years instead of just one? It's not like the replacement boards are made better.) Labor is covered only for 90 days though so it won't be free if they have to come back after that.

GE refrigerator 12 years old runs continuously, exterior warm


Probably not. Newer (and I mean under 15 years old or so) refrigerators may run more % of the time than older units, but are using far less energy while running, so total energy consumption is actually less. The newest energy star models often use less electricity than a single incandescent light bulb uses if left on 24/7. If your run times are noticeably longer just recently, and there have been no other significant changes to account for it (like more and / or longer door openings or a warmer ambient temp., etc.) then you may have caught a defrost problem or bad door gasket problem early. The warm temp on the outer case near the freezer is to prevent condensation from forming in those areas, and is normal. (as a matter of fact, older refrigs often used low wattage electric heaters for that task, almost all newer units use waste heat from the cooling system to accomplish that task) Please don't bother rating this solution, as anything but a Fix-Ya lowers my overall score. GE Fridge/Freezer Having to turn temp up just to keep it cold


From your comment. It's not that you have to defrost the parts, that's what they're called. "defrost timer", "defrost t-stat" and "heat element". Defrosting the whole fridge for a few days actually will clear the ice blockage if that's it but it will return in a couple weeks if the "defrost cycle" isn't doing its thing. A fridge typically goes into some form of "defrost cycle" to keep it "frost free". As an example, every 12 hours the compressor turns off and the evap. fan turns off then a heat element turns on to melt the light coating of ice on the "cooling coils". Once about 1/2 hour goes by the heating turns off and the cooling turns back on again. This repeats over and over to keep the ice from building up too much. If that cycle is broken, the ice will build and build till the whole coil is a block of ice. Then the air can't flow around it to provide cold air for the whole unit. It acts basically like putting a large block of ice in the freezer and keeping the doors closed... without a fan to move the cold air only the very lower portion of the freezer is cold, the rest is warm.
