A Dodge Dakota with 4-wheel steer? Do you happen to mean 4-wheel drive?

If so, you should not operate the vehicle in 4-wheel drive when you are traveling on a hard, high-traction surface. When in 4x4, the transfer case connects the front and rear axles, and does not allow for differentiation of wheel speeds necessary when turning. This is compensated for when driving over low-traction terrain because the tires slip easier.

Basically, the jerking, bucking and locking of the truck is due to the binding. This will eventually lead to damage in the driveline. If the roadway isn't covered in snow, there is no need for the 4 wheel drive to be engaged.

Will the wheel alignment cause the steering to have play in it if it is out of alingment

Generally, no. However, if your wheels are toed out, the tires catch grooves in the road and wants to wander over the road. It may feel like "play" in the steering. Play in the steering is usually caused by bad tie rods and they let the wheels wiggle while driving and the effect is a car that wants to wander over the road.

Key won't turn

hi there,

Your car has a steering lock that clicks into place when you take the car key out of the ignition. This prevents thieves from being able to steer your car if they hotwire it. Sometimes the wheel is turned to just the right place to keep your key from being able to disengage that steering wheel lock. All you have to do is turn the wheel a little bit in either direction while you turn they key. and your done!

Try rotating the steering wheel in both directions while applying rotational force on the key.

I have had this problem on a F150 where the person pulled in their driveway and proceeded to turn the car off but turned the wheel while the powersteering was still on, when the engine stopped the steering wheel rotated and locked from the force of the truck.

Hope this helps!

When i engage my 4x4 touch drive system in my 1992 explorer my front wheels are locking up and then my steering is all over the place and its hard to handle i have to stop and disengage my 4x4 and then...

Sounds like the differential is messed up causing the left wheel to have traction then shifting it to the right wheel,,back and forth, causing the truck to pull one way then the other. I've never seen it happen, but I've been thinking about your problem for a while now, and that's the only solution I can come up with.

Turned steering wheel after powering off cuz I am parked on a hill...it locked up and now the ignition is locked too...how can I start the car?

your steering wheel lock is connected to ignition in column, pull hard on steering wheel in direction wheels are turned at the same time turn key, this should free them both up.

Left turns sometimes makes knockin noise seems left front, i see that the outside of that tire is worn too. I had front brakes/rotors replaced and seems since then it was happenin but not always

Could also be the upper ball joint, put a jack under the lower control arm and jack the left wheel off the ground, the trick is to try to get it at normal ride hight, grab the tire at the top and bottom and try to push and pull the top in and out inline with the ball joint. have a helper eye the ball joint and see if there is any motion(play) at the joint. If not, check the bottom the same way. if they are both good, try it side to side to check the tie rods for play, make sure the steering wheel is locked. if all checks good than it is probably the cv joint if the truck is four wheel drive, if it is not four wheel drive it's definately is not a cv joint because you don't have them. For the four wheel drive model, go to a large parking lot, put the truck in a tight left turn, this will stress the cv joint, making it click, you will hear the noise from the side with the bad joint. Then tru a hard right turn, then do the same things again, this time driving in reverse. That should allow you to isolate the noise, Please rate this four thumbs up if it helped, i appreciate your feedback. Thanks, Bob

Locked steering wheel

Sounds like the rack is broken inside steering column. This happened to me while getting tires replaced at pep-boys. Try moving the tilt wheel up and down while turning key.

05 dakota front brakes

Try taking a look at your front wheel bearings. Lift the front of the vehicle then grab the tire from the bottom and the top. Push in on the top and pull out on the bottom. If you have a lot of movement then your wheel bearings are bad or need to be tightened. If that does not work I would look into the accumulator for the ABS and it's surrounding switches and relays.
