Re: USB drive not working

There's a lot of software and hardware that is not compatible with windows vista in its early stage. I suggest checking the Toshiba website for updates and solutions on getting it to work.

Re: USB drive not working

Look at the BIOS if USB support is enabled, if not, enable it.

Can we format pc by usb drive

you have to format your hard drive using a third party disc to erase everything on your hard drive
During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup
Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos restart
note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system
note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to your hard drive
The options listed for 1st,2nd ,3rd Boot device include:
IDE0 means Pri master
IDE1 means Pri slave
IDE2 means Sec master
IDE3 means Sec slave

or if you are using a USB
insert your usb drive
click start right click on my computer select open you should see your USB drive

I have Lenovo Ideapad S10-3s. I have changed the OS to WinXP SP3 from the earlier Win7 Starter. The whole thing is working fine. My External DVD burner i.e., Lenovo GP20N (suitable for Ideapad S10-3s) also...

Hi wsmurty,

I see that you are having issues regarding your External DVD drive, you also mentioned that the Operating system was down graded to WinXP SP3 from Win7 Starter.

  • If this only happen just a day ago or possibly just hours ago you can try doing a system restore on the machine, restore to an earlier date at least a day or two from the day that the DVD drive was not dected on the machine. if this does not work then try the steps below.
  • Check Device manager to see if there are any drivers that you may have missed out for the Lenovo System.
  • Possible Drivers that can cause your USB's not to detect the External DVD drive will be the chipset drivers.
  • Second Driver is the driver for your External DVD drive see if it is up to date or possible that it may needs updating on the case.
  • Is the External DVD detected in My Computer? If it is then Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for your External DVD drive can be done just to check then update the driver for it if possible from the manufacturers website.
I hope that this helps.

Have a nice day,

I have a Acer Asprie 4730Z, the problem is with both USB. And this is the wired part, I plug in a Ex HD with it's own power source and it WORKS fine, but when I plug in just USB divice and nothing happens....

I own 3 external drives one is a western digital the other two are seagates and all 3 of them have to have power to them they wont work without power being applied to them. I assume the Toshiba you have is no different it needs power applied to it too in order to make it function. The only external USB drive that runs with no power applied to them would be a USB stick the bigger drives need power applied to them because basically all they are is a hard drive like you have in your computer.

I hope this helps you out then please give me a YES that you were helped.

Anyone know where to get the drivers for my LG lightscribe burner GSA-E30L ?

Windows XP/Vista/7 operating systems have the driver for all disc drives build in. If it isn't working, then the driver is not your problem.

My computer won't load any driver for webcams.

If they are USB then DO NOT PLUG IN until driver is loaded, most common fault.

Usb dvd writer can install xp?

Yes you can use a usb external cd/dvd-rom to any operating system as long as the bios allows you to, most bios's have the capability.

When the external usb drive has been connected power up the mechine, in post it should tell what to press to enter your boot menu without entering your bios and choose usb drive to boot.

Will this drive work on a vista 64 bit system?

Try putting the same disks into some other CD/DVD reader, to confirm that the disks are "good".

It definitely should work in XP, XP/64, Vista, Vista/64,
but you could have the misfortune to have purchased a "lemon", i.e., a factory-defective unit.

Got another computer to which you can temporarily connect the new drive, to confirm that the drive will work "somewhere" ?

If all else fails, take it back to the retailer, and get them to demonstrate that it works in one of their computers, using your disks. If it does not, then they should replace it with one that CAN read your disks.

New cable for Toshiba External SuperMulti Drive, error now

Not all usb market cables meet the manufacturer specifications .

So u should use the original Cord, if not try one or more cables from any other device you got that have the same ports.
