M35X Screen went black and will not come back on after shut down, reset and power up

My M35X is 3 years old and has worked fine up until now. While I was browsing, my screen suddenly went black. I shut down by holding down the power button, then removed battery and attempted to reset the laptop by holding the power button down for 15 seconds. Replaced battery and powered on again... fan kicks on like the hard drive is booting up but still no screen.

Could this be as simple as a backlight or is it something more serious, like a video controller? At this point, I just want to recover the files on my hard drive.

What's the easiest way to recover the HD information?

Thanks for your suggestion. However, I've already tried connecting my laptop to my desktop monitor. Still blank :(

A co-worker is going to try to help me recover my data so I'll cross my fingers!

Thanks again for trying to help!

Thanks for trying - I did try connecting my laptop to my desktop monitor but still no screen.

Try to connect to external monitor and see if you see anything. Of course when you do that you have to hold at the same time fn key and the key that has a blue picture of computer screen.

a 17 year old Laptop , 99.9% now in the dumpster.
are you going to spend cash on this? if yes why?
if it was a horse it be in the glue factory.
a dead laptop
step 1: is remove that old shorted huge battery now.,
step 2: then that 17 year old useless as a brick RTC coin cell.
replace it now. or BIOS will be DEAD.
strep 3 , a working power pack 19vdc,65watts up. and does the PC fan work now?, if not, it needs lots more cash !!!!
ask if you can get this far.?
above can be done for $10 (8buck pack and 2 buck coin)
leave that main battery out , until the PC runs like new.
do not buy a battery main, do not. unless cash dont matter.

if this far, and the power button fails, then we must strip the PC down, to find out who is shorting the power buses !
or fan is bad, or just packed fully in lint , as all are that old.

do the HP hard reset yet,
?
see line 6 here, to the HP page on , hard power reset.
http://pcdied.com/black-screen.html#Laptop

and then the other tests. after that.

here are the goals
1: power seems to work (the switch)
2: the fan works, and actually blow air, not packed up
3: screen shows text of any kind, like, "hit F10 to enter HP setup"
as seen for 17 years but not todaY?
4:BIOS key works. F10 key works as prompted . and BIOS screens all work.
5: more, get this far say so... lots more its not a toaster

UPS shuts down when the mains is off.

Hi

After 3 years, i would by a new UPS...

The battery will have to be changed if you want to keep the old one.

What i've seen mostly here in south africa. When the battery life has ended they customer opens the ups and takes out the battery and then connects a car battery to the terminals. The then close the ups and let the car battery stand outside the ups.

Hope this info helps...

3 blinks means the convergence circuits are shutting the set down. Usually the convergence ICs will take care of the problem, but I would recommend getting the service manual from the following link, as they will provide you free support to help you diagnose why it wont start as usually the convergence ICs wont prevent a set from powering up, unless another component in the convergence circuit has failed.

Screen goes blank also.

I too have an LCD Xerox - it worked fine for a while, then kept going blank and going onto standby. Unplugging and reconnecting from both pc and power seems to reset it. It hadn't happened for months but started again the other night when it occurred to me that I had just downloaded MS security updates - I've removed the ones that I downloaded just before it started happening again and the problem seems to be solved. Hope this helps someone.
