How to boot PowerBook G4 with damaged display

I would like to know what tips you could offer that would enable me to boot a PowerBook G4 (Aluminum 15" 1.5GHz) that has a damaged LCD display.  I have access to an external monitor, but, it doesn't appear to work when the computer is booted.  Is there a connection that needs to be removed inside the computer to enable this?  I am fairly tech savvy for repairs and have total access to the inner workings of this computer.  I just can't figure out if it is possible to use this laptop without the LCD screen.
Thanks a bunch for any input!!

Download and install "Screen Spanning Doctor" for mac (freeware, great prog). Use clamshell mode (see readme). Hook up external monitor (DVI out?). Boot normally... Keep shell closed. Works for me :>

You should be able to just remove the ribbon cable that connects the display to the MOBO and use the external monitor. IIRC, the PB G4 Al has digital and S-video ports; please check that the correct cables/adapters are being used. Also, be careful that the external monitor supports the native screen size and refresh rate, or there will be consequences.

Can I upgrade my processor from 667 mhz to 867 mhz on my powerbook g4?

The short answer is no, because it is soldered to the motherboard. Third party companies have offered processor upgrades for certain machines. In my opinion, they tend to be very expensive and not very effective. It's usually more efficient to buy a faster computer.

I don't know if these companies are still in business. Here's a website to check out:

Check to make sure it is compatible with your PowerBook, and check the Better Business Bureau to make sure the company(ies) is/are still viable.
