Question about Toshiba 42H83 42" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

Toshiba RPTV is projecting too big of an image for the screen!

I have a 2002 Toshiba RPTV Model 65h84, i recently had it calibrated and bought DirecTV's HD package. The picture is surprisingly very good, but the screen image on HD channels is about 2inches too big.

The problem is most obvious when i'm watching an HD channel that has a news or stock ticker. Half of the streaming ticker will be off the screen.

On a computer monitor there is always a control for height/width of the screen's image. Is there one on an RPTV?

I took the bezel off the front and there is a control box under a cover that is clearly marked for engineers only. Is the magic control in here???

Changing the picture size between full/theater/wide/etc was the first thing i tried. For some reason the image size becomes fixed when watching HDTV. It will unlocked when I switch inputs to DVD.

If i try to change the STB to 720p the screen goes blank. The screen will only reappear after i change back to 480i, 480p or 1080i.

maybe. I'm not sure what exactly should be "calibrated" other than the quality of the picture. The accuracy of the R/G/B guns are actually very good. I also have a brand new panasonic plasma and while the RPTV isn't as good - it's a respectable HD picture. If it was below average I would have sold it after I bought the HD channels, but the picture is so good I couldn't justify selling it.

It's just that about 5% (maybe less) of the image is projected off the screen. It's on my favorite show, so it's an important 5%. :)

Other problem is a slight bow in the image. It is always on top and in the center, on all inputs. Are the 2 issues related?

I can't change the picture mode while watching HDTV/DirecTV, only while watching DVDs.

I can't seem to get into the "Service Mode" either. When I press the menu button and then 9, It jumps out of the menu and changes the TV channel to 9. I've tried it a dozen times and it keeps doing it. I've tried using the remote and the buttons on the TV. No luck.

So without getting to the first step of checking setting, any other ideas?

  • 4LeggedPolly Mar 11, 2008

Yes, I tried it. But they do not work in the DirecTV mode, only on DVD. The option is voided out.

  • 4LeggedPolly Mar 11, 2008

This option in the MENU does not exist for me. All the other options are available, except this one which is greyed out.

I take it that pic size on remote doesn't solve this.

Maybe we should walk threw service adjustments ie pic below shows us service mode adjustments on the 65h84

  • Soulvisitor
    Soulvisitor Jan 17, 2008

Yup the tell tale bow is convergence out, can be a adjustment, but most times it is a issue with the convergence board. namely the STK transistors, would say is related. There is normally a Auto focus or convergence setting on user menu. I'll do some study and come back, thanks for additional info it helps us understand so much clearer,

Press mute twice on remote, mute displays on tv, keep pressing mute on remote and press menu on tv at same time you should see a S, for service mode we will go in and see idf we can unbow first, but if it wont go it means that the TV needs board work. OK?

Press menu button on the TV to enter Adjustment mode, you should see us in adjustment mode...

let's run a self test, press 9 on remote to execute it

Now we should see a screen like as follows.

I'm curious about 5 main is it red or green?

  • Soulvisitor
    Soulvisitor Jan 17, 2008

If it is red then we have a convergence circuit problem and the set will need to see a doctor

If it is green we can go on to adjust convergence

    Soulvisitor Jan 17, 2008

Page 25 of users guide has basic customer convergence adjustment you should try that before we do any adjustments in service mode.

Did you try all of the options in the picture size menu (pages 29-32 in manual)?

The picture on my Toshiba 65H84 - 65 Inch Theaterwide HD Projection Television is going dark. Is there a bulb that I can replace? If so, how?

This model 65H84 is a rear projection type with three picture tubes. And if I am not mistaken is around 10 years old. So, if it is at least 10 years old then the picture tubes are getting weak and burned out, therefore not producing a bright enough picture. Typical with rear projection with age on them.

Problem with toshiba 65H84

Good Day, mowattearl;

The most common with this TOS TV is the failure of the convergence IC's, but rebooting, resetting first, unplug TV from wall for 3-5 minutes then plug back into wall. The "conv" IC's are STK's, large black devices mounted to a large heat sink on the verticle.

Good luck, big IRISH.

Dim picture from one broken lamp??

The red CRT is most likely not the culprit. If water got on to any of the boards such as the red CRT driver board it could damage it wich also at the same time can load down voltages (200 volts etc) that can have a global affect on the other CRT's. Changing any on the CRT's by the average consumer is NOT recommended because you are dealing with a device that requires 30 KV (thats thirty thousand) volts to make it light up. Take these as warnings and consult with a technician.

Double imaging

The Toshiba 55H70 is a standard rear projection set. It does not have a "lamp", it has 3 picture tubes. When the colors suddenly do not line up on the screen, it means that one of your convergence output IC's has burned out and needs to be replaced. This is very common on those sets. If your set is using the STK392-110 IC's, it is probably a good idea to go ahead and replace both IC's with the newer upgraded STK392-150 IC's. The IC's should be replaced and the convergence circuits realigned by a qualified tech familiar with Toshiba projection sets.
