HI I just purchased Philips usb powered 160gb external harddisk and formatted to fat32 but player didn't recognize it.

could it be usb bus power insufficency?

can I overcome the problem with an external power adapter

  • asga May 04, 2008

I've succesfully used a Lacie 80 GB USB HDD in my Philips 5960. But I recently bought a 160 GB one, and says "incompatible". I even reformatted it to FAT32 with no success. My guess is either power or something like sector size.

(the manual also says USB is just for JPEG and audio, but videos play fine, so the manual is not perfect)

The same issue with WD Passport Elite 500 Mb External HD and Philips DVP 5990K/55. I've gone through 2 FAT 32 formats already and no luck yet. I will try this Swiss Army application, but am not too optimistic.

You can use that HD or any Hard Drive for that matter, only thing is, that you have to have it formatted in FAT32 format, not NTFS which it probably is by default nowadays. There is a program called swissarmy and it will format any drive to fat32, and you will be able to store whatever u want on there like a normal drive, basically u wont notice a difference except the fact that now it works with your dvd player.

My wd 500 gig external hard drive keeps blinking and my computer doesnt recognize it. whats going on?

How do you have it connected to your PC? USB or Firewire? try plugging it in to different slots or try plugging it in on another computer to further isolate the problem. some external drives requires power adapter to work so make sure that you're using the power adapter if it comes with the device. if not, there might be something wrong with the device specially if it was working before

Western Digital External hard drive not appearing under my computer or anywere else apart from Device manager (USB mass storage device) and safely remove usb hardware, have tried another comp with no luck...

1st dismantle the hdd and change sata to usb adapter. Get cheap on ebay. Certainly, most wd makes hdd motherboard with usb straight away, but still worth to try. BUT, before all check if your pc usb is working, check with mouse or smth. If so, then try change cable. After cable try dismantle that hdd and change mentioned adapter. If none of these work, you then have a lesson, never western digital, seagate only1

Hi,

The problem you're having is unfortunately common. You can try to test it with a new USB cable but if that doesn't work. Chances are you will need to send it to a pro.

If the USB cable doesn't work get back to me and I can recommend a service that can aid you further

Hope this Helps,

Dell d400 problems with Western Digital 32 gig hard drive

try connecting to a differnt port if it still does the same thing change the usb cable because what i understand is there is a loose connection somewhere ... or the best thing is contact dell at 18006249896 and ask them that u want to change the internal hdd and they will tell u what maximum the system can support and which is available with them ... its their system and if u buy parts from them they have to support u and make sure they both work

External Harddrive Ignorance...

I've seen this happen with hubs being connected to external hard drives before.

Do you have a free usb port on the back of your computer you can plug it into?

That should fix the problem.

Mybook essential

Hi guys...
I had kind of the same problem like u...when i plugged it into the usb all i got was a "unknown usb device found"
I opened the external case hoping the hdd was still ok only to find out that the hdd cables had been moved slightly out of position..propably from a fall or a knock I didn't even noticed..
I just pressed them back in..click..and everything was back to normal..

These sites have info about how to open the external case..
