Toshiba 61H70 Popped Loud & Fixed Then Popped Again & Again ;(

Hello...

Thanks for a great read in the forums.

I purchased the 61H70 back early in 2001. It worked well for about 3 months, then started with the loud popping and the picture going out then coming back on. A few days later it popped really loud and never came back.

Toshiba had the local center repair it, and they said they replaced a few caps and blah blah blah taking almost 1 month. That time it lasted about 2 weeks before doing the same thing (a few pops and fade, then one final pop goodbye).

They came and got it and had it for almost 5 months all the while running me around. Finally Best Buy demanded they fix it ASAP and they delivered it to me on, get this (09/11/2001). Fired it up to watch the events of that sad day and about an hour later...you guessed it POP and dead.

Best Buy replaced it with a Sony and let me keep the Toshiba for all my trouble. Helps that I knew the general manager at our local BB.

Anyway...I've read that the crt's can arc and cause this problem as well as the HV block leaking spark through the foil on the underside of the PCB.
I also read somewhere that it might also be a gassy electrolytic causing the popping.

Anybody have any ideas where to start??? It's either getting fixed, or sinking to the bottom of the ocean, since my basement is getting a early spring cleaning.

It has the dreaded flashing front light without picture. Could the IC's cause this??? I've never heard anyone mention the loud pop in the same message as the IC's. The picture was always crystal clear, it just POPS dies and starts blinking.

Thanks for any leads!

61H70 common repair via local Toshiba repair shop:

    No Startup = Check Q404 (2sc5570) and pico fuse f470 (2A)

    Dead = Check Q801 (strz4369, 23135015) or replace QA02

Intermittent Reset = Add cotton tape and capacitor (0.47uf) across pin 54 of QA01 and GND (CA61 GND side)

Dead Relay Clicks = Replace zener D878 (9.1V)

    HOT Fails Often = Replace C403 (22uf/100V)

Picture Fades Comes Back Blurry = Replace Q510 and Q221

When environment temperature rises above 95 grade F, television goes out of convergence and vertical slowly rises from bottom of screen = Connect capacitor (10pF/50V) between R4013 (Q421 collector) and R4012 (Q421 base). Add insulation tape underneath capacitor as necessary.

Intermittently no blue colour. Distorted lines in picture = Replace Q751 (STK392110)

Rolling picture. No convergence. Red foldover = Replace Q751 (STK392110) and R7726 (1.2R)

No picture. Audio and OSD OK = Check R243 and R244 (22K/0.16W)

Q510 replacement = 2 IC types have been alternately used as Q510.a) TA1316Nb) TA1316AN...The 2 types are not interchangable. When replacement of Q510 is necessary, the original type must be used. Do not use part number listed in the service manual. Use part numbers listed. Q510, type IC: TA1316N - Use P/N: 23000358 Q510, Type IC: TA1316An - Use P/N: 23000584

    Dead & Power LED flashes = Check fuse F860 (4A) for O/C, Q801 (STR-Z4369), D862 (NTE552). Also check zener diodes D873 (27V), D875 (9.1V), D877 (27V) and D878 (9.1V).

    Hope this helps everyone ;)

My guess is that that high voltage seals on tubes are leaking out high voltage from tubes if not probly sealed with silicon they will leak out high voltage.replace them and seal coorrectly this may fix your problem

Toshiba 61H70 Weird Convergence Issue?

They may have gotten some cheap convergence ICs, thats a real possibility. I would recommend switching the two origional STK392-110 with some STK392-150 they will run alot cooler and last alot longer. Just use a good coating of heat sink compound on the back of the ICs. I will post a link where you can get top quality Convergence ICs and they provide free instalation instructions with pictures so you can do the job yourself in under an hour and save quite a bit of money. Heres the link.

Toshiba 61h70 Picture Problems Hello, I have a Toshiba 61h70 TheaterView HD Projection TV, and was recently having some slight convergence issues (red was out of alignment and could not be adjusted). So I researched and found that the IC?s (STK392-110) needed to be replaced. I initially purchased them on eBay, to later find out that they were cheap clones and did not work (they made the convergence worse, actually). I then purchased 100% Sanyo IC?s from a reputable dealer and replaced the IC?s again. Once finished, I then entered the service menu and adjusted the convergence alignment. Once the alignment was perfect, I hooked back up the TV antenna, the DVD player (composite), and the S-video from my computer. The convergence is fine, but now I?m having a totally different issue ? the video is ?scrolling?. The menus will show up fine, however any incoming video inputs will show up okay for a split-second, but will then flash and the picture starts to scroll in different directions. This happens with any of the video inputs. I checked and changed all the service menu items to factory defaults, however this had no effect. I have pasted a link below to a short video that illustrates the issue that I?m having. Please note that the video starts off with a black screen, showing the ?input? menu, and then I selected the ?TV input? and changed the channels. You will see the picture fine for a moment when the channel is first changed, but then the picture will start to scroll. Any ideas of what would be causing this? And how can I correct the issue? I?m not a TV repair expert, so I?m not even sure where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated. http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i303/hybrydmike/?action=view₪t=TV_Troubles.flv
