According to your problem first check the power cord and electric input of the scanner. Check also your electric outlet where you have plugged your scanner. If your scanner get power but do not work then check the roller and light movement. If it stuck then there is some problem. May be you need to replace the roller. It needs a repair.

My scans all come out black.

Black out output in scanners means that the lens of the scanner has already been damage, buy a new one or have a technician to replace the light bulb anf the lens of your scanner.

We can only get our scanner to work intermittently. it shows that there is electric current to the scanner with a green light but many times we have to wiggle the connection to get the scanner to work

Are you using the original power supply for the scanner? It should be a neat tight fit. Either replace the power supply or if yourself or somebody you know is handy with a soldering iron get the correct size plug and solder away.

The bulb is blown, it may function once in a while, but repairing may be too costly.
Your scanner has a 1200dpi resolution. There are similar, yet better scanenrs for less than $50.
You might consider an EPSON scanner/printer for under $50. Some EPSSON printers can also print CD labels, directly printing onto the CD!

Balck band on the screen when scanning

If black bands are appearing on all documents your scanning then yes you have to get a new scanner. Main board inside of the scanner is going bad and you can't buy spare parts for scanners.

The other thing you can check just to be sure. When the scanner is scanning the light will go all the way to one side and then move all the way to the other side. Look at the light and see if it stays on the whole way when its moving from side to to side, if it does then the main board is bad, if it doesn't then it could be a faulty scanner light and that you maybe able to replace depending on how old the scanner is. Best thing at that point would be to google your scanner and see if that spare lamp is available.

Canon CanoScan5000/5000F - light bulb out

TheComp, I tried what you suggested, but no luck. The scanner is dead. The computer does not even read the scanner through the usb. I called Canon tech support. They tell me that this unit is not serviceable and offered a 20% discount to buy another Canon scanner. No thanks. I don't need another piece of electronic junk. I'll wait for a sale to buy another make. Thanks for your help.

Lamp replacement

Just replace the lamp! It's just a fluorescent light you can get anywhere. You don't need a new scanner, if I had to replace the scanner every time the lamp died I be in the poor house!
