Kitchenaid Mixer K45SS

My mixer needs a new Speed Control Board. I purchased the board but it came with no instructions. I need a diagram as to where the part goes and how to get there. Thanks.

Re: Kitchenaid Mixer K45SS

I just did this last week!
1 Unplug Mixer 2 Remove screw on TOP of mixer body, at back. 3 Remove rear cover and paper-gasket thing (its not the end of  the world if you end up tearing it a little). 4 the phase control (little circuit board w/wires) is at the top (you  should see it very easily) held on by one screw, remove it. 5 when the circuit board is unscrewed, disconnect all the wires  that are connected FROM THE CIRCUIT BOARD to the  black control plate (NOT all wires-there should be 4 left on  the control plate at this point).  you don't need to  remember where all the colors go as the control plate is  labeled->but looking at them and making sure you  understand the abbreviations would be beneficial  (BK=black, BL=Blue RW=Red&White W=white R=red etc.   6 install new phase control (screw), either buy new thermal  grease (used to keep the board cool->it transfers heat to  the mixer's housing) or try to salvage what you can from  the old one. 7 connect wires, paying attention to labels. 8 reinstall paper gasket, then cover, then screw to hold on back- cover.

Send me your email address and I will send you a copy of service manual. I am not sure exactly which part you are talking about. Control plate, phase control?

KitchenAid mixer runs at full speed only

It is most likely the phase board which is the little PCB under the back cover at the top, it has 4 wires coming out of it that plug into the black speed control board.

Kitchenaid Hobart K45SS when set at 1-2 accelerates to high speed when making dough. How can I fix this?

Usually when the mixer runs only on high speed it is caused by the control plate adjusted incorrectly or the control plate spring unhooked. Remove the trim & end cover on the mixer and check the control plate spring, if unhooked, attach to bottom of the control plate and squeeze the spring end, also check the speed control plate screws, there are 3 screws on this plate, one at the bottom two at the top, see if adjusting the top screws slows your mixer down.
Next check the wiring of the mixer, Insure everything is wired correctly, to get wiring diagram go to the last page of the service manual. Here is a link to the service manual:
If neither of those fixes the problem it is probably a bad phase control board, or a shorted phase control board. With the line cord disconnected, pull the t-bar contacts to open and insert a piece of paper between them so they cannot close. Reapply power-the mixer should just run or buzz trying to run, if it operates at full speed the phase control is defective and needs to be replaced.
Use the service manual to aid you in taking apart the mixer, trouble shooting the problem and putting the mixer back together, based on the mixer only running at high speed some of the time I would assume it is the speed control phase board.
If you have any questions let me know.
Thank you,

Kitchenaid K45 Mixer will only run at one speed, fast

is it a K45 or a K45SS? If it is a K45 you will have to replace the filters inside and probably the speed control plate, if it is a K45SS then you need a new phase control board. The K45 is pre 1978 and the K45SS is post 1978. Your information is correct on pre 1978 K45 models that the capacitor is bad, but it might be cheaper to go garage sale hunting and find a second machine as the parts are no longer made and having spares on hand may be a significant advantage in the future, also there are a great many of the K45SS parts that will also repair the K45 mixer so it may not be a practical solution. Watch ebay regularly for K45 parts, they come up every couple of months. On the parts diagram also look for the K5 diagram as it is identical to the K45, one is a 5 quart mixer and the other one is 4.5 quart, same parts same motor same everything.

I am sorry to say but only with a new one, about 30 bucks and five minutes of work, but if your mixer has any speeds working except only high (only high means it is the phase control board) then it is more likely the speed control board is bad rather than the phase board. Can you send is more info on what happened when the mixer started or stopped working. We can be of more help with more info

Mixer doesn't work on all speeds

First the K45SS does not have a hall effect sensor. the pro series the epicurean seines and the pro series 5 use them, The K45ss system uses a phase control board a speed control plate and a governor for speed control. the governor rarely goes out the phase control board is a likely culprit but the system would work only in high gear if it was bad. I agree with the guest above in that it sounds like the retaining nuts on the adjusting screws of the speed control board have worked themselves loose and the adjustment screws themselves have vibrated out of proper position.

Does the kitchenaid K45SS have a hall effect sensor?

The K45SS has three components that regulate the speed: the Governor Assembly (35) a Control Plate Assembly (36) and a Phase Control Board (39/40 depending on the voltage of the machine). I attached a schematic of the machine to this post. You can find the parts on our website under K45SS if what you need is still available. If you don't see it contact us and we'll see if we can get them for you.

Mixer only operates at high speed regardless of the speed setting

the triac solid-state component on the board for the motor speed control is shorted and you need a new control board, unless you can find an outsource replacement triac, most companies won't sell you parts because of liability issues on internal parts of the unit

Mixer speed settings

It could be the phase control, or it could be that the governor assembly or associated spring is missing or malfunctioning.
