Question about Novell NetMail XE 3.1 for PC

Not receiving email through Netmail

I have exhausted every possible solution to this problem. I work in a Post Secondary Institute and give our students a netmail account at the beginning of each semester. this Past week Netmail stopped working meaning not emails are going through. Kick back messages are not coming up so it looks like they have gone through. netmail server is running so I am not sure what is going on. I went to the Novell website and checked their cool solutions page but nothing seems to work.
Again netmail is running on the server, no network changes have taken place

Re: not receiving email through Netmail

I noticed no one responded to you so let me at least give you some thoughts you may not have tried.

The first thought is you could have any number of problems.
The second thought is you may have tried some or even all that I am about to suggest. They are listed in priority.

1. Using something equivalent to Avast or Avg (anti-virus) scan your entire network. Kids bring disks in and disks can have bad things on them.
2. If that comes up clean uninstall the application inclusive of deleting the resident application folders (not the email) that are left behind.
3. Try reinstalling. If it still does not work go to step 4.
4. Next (and I assume you did this or it would have been higher on the list) go to device manager and make sure all devices are working.
5. If at this point it still does not work you may have a corrupted file somewhere (i.e. in windows - I assume you are not using linux) that Novell depends on but is only used (probably) by the server.

Let me know where you are at and I will get back to you....take notes please as I may need some detail information. I assume you have run a "thorough" scandisk to check for cross linked files and other disk problems on the server by the way.

You might (since it appears you are in charge) also want to download and run on all machines the following if maintenance is antiquated or a bit sloppy (catch as catch can). They are all free and excellent maintenance tools. You can download from cnet downloads or any of the free sites (i.e.

Ccleaner - run both windows and application clean up and most importantly the registry cleaner....don't worry it's safe and automatic. Run it on the server.

Spybot (search and destroy) - run it on the server and all other machines on the network.

Hope this helps...based on you finding nothing at the novell site your problem is probably elsewhere....and what you have indicated is something a number of virus's do....hence the first task on the list.

Tango.....have will take some time....(did I hear a cork popping out of bottle of Merlot?)

The email which i receive looks ok on thepage but

Are you copying your emails from outlook into Notepad then printing? If this is the case you must realize that notepad doesn't save formatting when information is copied from another media.

Try copying your Email into a Program such as WordPad, or Microsoft Works. It will keep true to the original formatting and will solve this problem.

My Aunt is having difficulty receiving even moderate size emails from me. I use Outlook and she is using Outloook Express. She used to be able to receive anything, but lately even minor emails are being...

There is no setting as such. I suggest she check her anti virus settings and make sure it isn't giving 'false positives'. If it is not anti virus related she should contact her ISP/POP email provider and ask them for assistance.

I am using a web portal to access my outlook emails and do not go into the office. I need to archive my email from the web portal can this be done

One solid solution is to setup your Email account on Outlook or Outlook Express and then use that to download your email / post office locally. From there you can back up this post office to an external hard drive or CDR (depending on the size of the files) and create a restorable archive of your email. Please contact your email administrator and inform them you need your Account / Email Server settings and that your going to use outlook to download your email.

Tip: - Before you Send/Receive email with your Outlook or Outlook Express - Change your Advanced Email Account settings to LEAVE EMAIL ON SERVER, this way the web portal will still contain a current copy of email and match what is downloaded in the outlook email client. To access this feature you can contact me via email at and I can walk you through it.

Location of email sender

Sort of. You can identify the address of the mail server which sent the email (by using the message headers, as you state).

You can then try to geolocate that server address. That's not 100% reliable, but it should at least tell you if the address is inside or outside the UK.

Look at the Internet Headers for the message (Right-click message and select "Options")

Look for "Received: from" lines. These come in reverse order. So the first one you see should identify your own mail server. The last one should identify the originating mail server (there may be several intermediate servers, depending on the route the message took. It would look something like this:

"Received: from ( [])"

Take that IP address and go to a geolocating service, like Paste the address into the Geolocate box and hit submit. It will give you a location for that IP address based on DNS records.

Since large companies may have a business address that doesn't necessarily correspond to their server location, this amount to a best guess. But it will give you something to go on.

Good Luck!
