Question about HP PSC 1210 All-In-One InkJet Printer

HP PSC 1210 all-in-one Director does not work with VISTA

When attempting to select print quality (Draft, Better, Best) from the print window Preferences tab a window quickly appears and disappears on the screen like the function is there but it's not. HP Director is non existant, always getting a compatibility diagnostic with no soloution. There are ways you guys show to scan, but can't select print type or really control print quality, it just prints thank God and HP wants you to buy another printer, KMA.

Yes, they suggest that you buy a new one.... Yeah, right!

Don't you get it? THERE IS NO DRIVER THAT WORKS THIS PRINTER PROPERLY! The HP 1210 driver disk that came with the printer ends at Windows XP, the driver offered online by Windows Vista is junk it does not operate the 1210 properly either. So now what HP and MS both know this.

I recently got a new Vista computer. I have an HP psc 1210. I just got off the phone with HP Technical Support. After about 15 minutes, the technician told me that this printer won't work with Vista and that my only option is to buy a new one. She then went on to try to sell me a new HP printer! Unbelievable!

  • mirage07 Feb 09, 2008

The driver that was supposedly included in the Windows Vista has compatibility issues after trying for about 5 hours to fix the printer problem. The HP diagnostic tool does not even work for HP PSC 1210 -said "oops, this page is not available". I hope they fix it soon.

I had the same problem but I went into add new hardware and selected manually select driver, selected HP, selected hp officejet 4100 series instead of hp1200 series and my printer works. I just thought I would let you know this worked for me

The HP Director does not work with win Vista.

  • Egret Mar 16, 2008

I download the driver HP recommended for vista and finally I got something to print. Unfortunately, it only prints about half the page and then stops. Canceling the print will not make it disappear from the print queue either.

I've been fighting the same. Did some hunting on the HP and MS web sites. Found a "work around". Not what I wanted but at least I can scan. I think HP Director is gone for Vista users. :(

Scanning with Windows Photo Gallery
1. Click the Start ( ) icon.
2. Click All Programs .
3. Click Windows Photo Gallery .
4. Click File and then click Import From Scanner or Camera .
5. Click Import .
6. Click Scan .

Poked around on HP and found this work around. Its not HP Director, but at least I can scan again.

    Scanning with Windows Photo Gallery

    1. Click the Start ( ) icon.

    2. Click All Programs .

    3. Click Windows Photo Gallery .

    4. Click File and then click Import From Scanner or Camera .

    5. Click Import .

    6. Click Scan .

HP Director software has always had problems. I've seen this in the tech world, only AFTER I already had my PSC 1210. And this was in XP Pro. Regardless of whether it was plugged into my main workhorse computer or my basic Dell that had just Windows, Firefox, and OpenOffice, I still had the same problem: After some time, the printer's scan button stopped initiating a response from my computer, and opening HP Director started the process but the app never appeared. Only fix was to completely uninstall/reinstall HP drivers and software. That would fix it for a short while.

I'm happy with the printer itself, and the scanner is okay, but HP's software sucks. Conversations with tech support people I know confirmed this. Going forward, I will consider HP only for print-only devices. If I get another all-in-one, I will research another brand.

On my new Vista Ultimate computer (fresh build, I haven't installed any software after the OS yet), I just now plugged in the PSC 1210 and it recognized the printer fine. I printed a couple quick documents, nothing complicated, and had success. I used the Photo Gallery's import feature to scan some stuff and it worked fine. Only problem was I set one scan as a 1200 dpi "document" (not photo) and it won't display the image in Photo Gallery--says it's corrupt or incompatible. Preview/thumbnail displays it, and I can open it in paint. Maybe it's just a huge file (12 MB) and Photo Gallery can't hack it?

HP doesn't have drivers for 1210 using Vista. They refer you to Vista having generic drivers. Vista drivers don't work. I spent around 5hours with HP Helpdesk loading, reloading, drivers etc. Still doesn't work so I have now gone and bought an Epsom. It worked first time. After nearly 30 years using HP ---- bye bye!

windows vista using an HP1210 all in one >>>>when you want to print something, try highlighting it by left clicking and dragging the "highlight' over what you want to print, right click and hit the print button, a box will pop up, click preferences from there you can change the print quality. make your selection, hit ok, the previous box will pop back up, check the SELECTION box and click print. this is the only way i have had any luck printing with the HP/Vista combination. i am still trying to figure out how to make the scanner to work

  • 95cobra351 Jan 09, 2009

im just about as computer illiterate as anyone could be but im not one to take NO for an answer, well, after 5 hrs of F&&k around, i finally got my 1210 to work with vista. YES IT WILL WORK scanner and printer both work, heres how i did it : first, unplug the USB then turn off the HP then remove EVERY HP file, delete all HP shortcuts, everything HP has to be removed restart your PC plug in the USB. windows will recognize the printer and run you through a few loops, follow the instructions, turn on the printer, then shut down the pc then restart again. after that, try to print something, you will get an error message asking for software. put in the disc. let it load, then shut down and restart. scanning will only work as guest 43 instructed, but if you want to get away from the HP/windows ***********, try it like i said, im computer illiterate, but i was determined not to be forced to buy yet another printer, or take my new computer back to best buy and tell the salesman he could shove it, this worked for me, now if i can only figure out how to get my UPS printer to work !

  • b112keg Sep 06, 2010

95cobra....this does not work. Below is what you posted....I followed your tip exactly, removed everthing about HP, shut down and restarted pc, then I pluged the USB in, nothing happened. Windows never recognized anything and didn't run me thru any loops. I thought maybe you made an error and was supposed to turn printer on. Tried that and got message saying to install driver....

    This does not work:

im just about as computer illiterate as anyone could be but im not one to take NO for an answer, well, after 5 hrs of F

Refilled my 56/57 ink cartridges on my 1210 all in one printer and even after aligning and cleaning it still has lines in it and is not the quality i need at all.

In that case, you better consider to but a new Genuine Cartridge, because it seems that some portion of your Cartridge nozzle got damaged.

If you still want to carry on with this refilled cartridge then try to print with Best Quality option enabled

Start >> Control Panel >> Printers and Faxes >> Select your printer and Right click then select Printing Preference . Here you can change print quality

Hope this gives you an idea. When printing from your pc, please select print properties to draft/best printing resolution. We'll see the difference between fast draft to best. Else you'll have to allign the printer settings from your pc, using the printers alignment tool.
