Question about HP PSC 1210 All-In-One InkJet Printer
When attempting to select print quality (Draft, Better, Best) from the print window Preferences tab a window quickly appears and disappears on the screen like the function is there but it's not. HP Director is non existant, always getting a compatibility diagnostic with no soloution. There are ways you guys show to scan, but can't select print type or really control print quality, it just prints thank God and HP wants you to buy another printer, KMA.
I've been fighting the same. Did some hunting on the HP and MS web sites. Found a "work around". Not what I wanted but at least I can scan. I think HP Director is gone for Vista users. :(
Scanning with Windows Photo Gallery
1. Click the Start ( ) icon.
2. Click All Programs .
3. Click Windows Photo Gallery .
4. Click File and then click Import From Scanner or Camera .
5. Click Import .
6. Click Scan .

HP Director software has always had problems. I've seen this in the tech world, only AFTER I already had my PSC 1210. And this was in XP Pro. Regardless of whether it was plugged into my main workhorse computer or my basic Dell that had just Windows, Firefox, and OpenOffice, I still had the same problem: After some time, the printer's scan button stopped initiating a response from my computer, and opening HP Director started the process but the app never appeared. Only fix was to completely uninstall/reinstall HP drivers and software. That would fix it for a short while.
I'm happy with the printer itself, and the scanner is okay, but HP's software sucks. Conversations with tech support people I know confirmed this. Going forward, I will consider HP only for print-only devices. If I get another all-in-one, I will research another brand.
On my new Vista Ultimate computer (fresh build, I haven't installed any software after the OS yet), I just now plugged in the PSC 1210 and it recognized the printer fine. I printed a couple quick documents, nothing complicated, and had success. I used the Photo Gallery's import feature to scan some stuff and it worked fine. Only problem was I set one scan as a 1200 dpi "document" (not photo) and it won't display the image in Photo Gallery--says it's corrupt or incompatible. Preview/thumbnail displays it, and I can open it in paint. Maybe it's just a huge file (12 MB) and Photo Gallery can't hack it?

HP doesn't have drivers for 1210 using Vista. They refer you to Vista having generic drivers. Vista drivers don't work. I spent around 5hours with HP Helpdesk loading, reloading, drivers etc. Still doesn't work so I have now gone and bought an Epsom. It worked first time. After nearly 30 years using HP ---- bye bye!
