I have tried everything suggested - still can't get the paper to feed through! I am feeding paper through the back slot and then vertically between the two silver rectangle tabs and black bar - still no feed - so frustrating! Any video of how to available? Or pictures? I don't have the manual...

Assuming that you know where the paper gets feed in, I usually use this trick to start a new roll of paper.
First, tear off the end of the new roll so that there isn't any glue stuck on the paper.
Then, fold the tip of the paper like an arrow. (Fold one side to the middle and the other side to the middle so both sides meet in the middle.
Then, place the paper into the slot where the paper feeds in.. (Usually goes under the printer assembly) and then hit the PAPER FEED button at the same time. If the paper is in the correct slot, the paper should start feeding the paper all the way through.
Hope this helps.
Have a good day.

Feeding paper into the Canon P1-DHV requires the nonobvious trick of inserting the paper into the roller area vertically rather than horizontally. Keep the removable cover off while doing this, and start by feeding the paper through the back slot. But rather than continuing to feed the paper horizontally (straight through) make it loop upwards and then downwards into the roller area, forming a sine curve in cross-section. Use the Feed button to advance it. Canon, please use the battery compartment cover as a paper-feed-path diagram in future versions of your product. -- bo@shmorhay.com 30-Mar-2008 17:30 San Diego

Thanks so much TheMacGyver... it really helped. paper should be fed thru da back (check gray slot)..... now i can work on my P170-DH again!!

I had the same problem. Paper would not feed.  Wasn't sure if I had the right input location for the paper but assumed that I did.  Nothing I did would help the paper feed through.  Finally noticed that the battery low light was on but that didn't cause me concern since the cal. was trying to feed the paper.  Finally replaced the batteries and the carriage that was sitting on the left side suddenly moved to the far right and the paper fed  through without any additional problems

OMIGOSH!! Thank you so much!!!!! My paper hasn't been feeding for two years; as the carriage was stuck on the left I assumed it was a mechanical failure. I use the ac adapter so never even thought about the batteries. I put in new batteries and wow!! the carriage shot to the right and it now prints again!!!! I was about to buy a new calculator, and I wasn't going to buy a Canon. So glad I read your post!

How do I load paper?

I have a casion hr-100tm calculator and found the easy way to load a new roll of paper. Take a 3x5 index card and cut it on 45 degree angle, then with angle on the right of the machine feet it into the machine pushing it as you go. Once it begins to feed so you can pull on it, then take other end of card, scotch tape to new roll of adding machine tape. As you feed the card through the roll of paper foillows. Once it has fed into machine cut off 3 x5 card. Easy.
The problem is that all rolls of machine paper are not equal and the thinner paper doesn't want to feed. This way it works for any type. Hope it hellps.

I have an old Sharp EL-1701C calculator and for some reason can not feed a new roll of paper into the unit? Batteries are new and the feed option works well, just doesn't grab the paper roll to start?

you may need to cut the corners off a little bit on the start of the new roll and feed the paper in while advancing with the calculator advance control/button

Trying to put in a new paper roll

Turn off the Sharp EL-1801V.

  • 2 Cut the end of the replacement paper roll for a fresh edge and to ensure a smooth feed. Do not tear the paper roll, as feeding a torn paper roll can cause a paper jam.
  • 3 Insert the cut edge into the paper opening on the back of the Sharp EL-1801V. Hold the paper roll so that the edge being fed into the machine is coming from the bottom of the roll. Turn the power on.
  • 4 Press the "Feed" button until the paper is fed through the unit. Lift the metal paper roll holder up. Slide the paper roll onto the paper-roll holder.

Cannot load new paper roll into the calculator so it catches

Replacing the paper roll involves feeding the evenly cut, uniform end of the roll through the fine slot located under the paper arm at the back of the calculator. (Even if the paper is only slightly wrinkled or cut unevenly, it will not feed through the teeth in the loading area.)
When getting ready to feed the paper into the calculator, envision your printout feeding out of the machine away from you and back toward the paper roll. Don't insert it upside down.
To get the paper feeding through once you have partially fed it into the teeth, gently tap the paper feed button. Once or twice should do it. (The button is located on the far top left of the control panel, indicated by an arrow jagged saw mark icon).
Then, slide the paper roll onto the feeder arm and you're in business.

On inside of machine it states how to:
    1. Place new paper roll on the left hub while pushing it in, lowering the roll into the compartment making sure it is inserted onto the right hub.
    2. Pass the leading edge of the paper through the paper cutter guide and the cutter.
    3. Remove any slack in the paper.
    4. Close the cover. The paper will feed out automatically.

The paper rolls over top front to back.

    Change paper

Paper roll installation is deceptively simple.  No need to feed paper through any slots inside the machine as you might expect.  Just put shiny side of paper down, feed edge of roll out of machine and under the roller that is attached to lid, and that is all there is to it!

Paper feed rolls is rolling over the paper...how to get access to those rolls

    1. Feed the paper manually into the printer:
      1. Place a sheet of plain A4 paper in the paper feed tray.
      2. Move the paper support on the left-hand side to the left end of the paper.
      3. Press the paper feed button.
      4. If the paper does not feed, continue with step 2.
    2. Check for any obstructions in the paper feed path:
      1. Disconnect the cables from the back of the printer.
      2. Open the front of the printer and check for anything that may be blocking the paper path.
      3. Close the front lid and remove any paper from the paper feed tray.
      4. Holding the printer in both hands, turn it upside down to see if anything falls out of the paper feed area. (Sometimes objects such as pens, paper clips and so on can fall into the paper feed area and cause blockages.)

You can clean with special cleaning paper which ca be used clean the rollers............

If the print-out is an 'alien-like' one, the problem is on the sensor of the printer. The sensor is on the opposite side of the gears. Under the black cover.
