I am in the 7th grade and need to do fraction and mixed number problems. how do I enter a fraction and/or mixed number? I would also like to do variable problems. Is it possible to enter variables into this calculator?

Re: fractions, mixed numbers, and variables.

Type the whole number then hit the ABC button then type the numerator then hit ABC then type the denominator

1ABC1ABC2 + 1ABC1ABC2=3

Re: fractions, mixed numbers, and variables.

It is acually quite simple all you need is to get some paper and a pencil and start working. OR you can try and ask me. I am in high school so chances are that i can solve it.

Re: fractions, mixed numbers, and variables.

Yes you can ifyou hit the abc button lik if you want 2 ans 2/3 you would type in 2 abc 2 abc 3 abc and then you can divide/multiply/add/subtract other frations from this. i am in the 9th grade.

I just want that there will be a blank paper for me to solve in

The fraction button is usually marked [a b/c]. Its shifted function [d/c] converts a mixed number into an improper fraction.

To enter a mixed number, say 7 3/5

Enter 7, press the [a b/c] key, enter 3, press the [a b/c] key, enter 5. Press =/EXE

The key marked [a b/c], the one below the [X,Theta,T] and [7], allows you to enter fractions either as mixed numbers or improper fractions.

To enter the mixed number 3 4/7 you key in**3 [a b/c] 4 [a b/c] 7 [EXE]**

To convert this to an improper fraction press [SHIFT] [F--D].

Pressing the [F--D] key toggles between fraction and decimal representation.

To enter the mixed number 3 4/7 you key in

If the result is positive, type in the integer part then add the fraction part either with the help of the fraction key or the division key. (I do not think that the TI82 has a fraction key.

If it is anything like the TI3 there is command under MATH >Frac. It should be pressed after you enter the mixed number to keep the result as a fraction.

If the mixed number is negative you enclose the whole number in parentheses. Press the change sign (-) key to negate the result.

Use the key marked [a b/c]

- To enter a mixed fraction, enter integral part, press [a b/c], enter the numerator pf fraction part, press [a b/c], then enter the denominator of the fraction and press =.
- To enter a fraction or an improper fraction, enter numerator, press [a b/c], then the denominator and =
- If the displayed result is a mixed number , use [2nd][a b/c] to convert it in a fraction (improper fraction).

Enter the whole number ,then hit ab/c on your calculator enter the upper number of the fraction then hit again ab/c then enter the lower number of the fraction. That way yuo can enter a mixed fraction.Hope this helps.

Hi eamon at hom,

Doing fraction on the Sharp El 531W really isn't that bad. I had to use pictures because, the symbols will not transfer over to your posting for me to show you. When you select the [ON/C] this clears the calculator of previous calculations and, data so that they won't interfere with your new calculations.

Let take the first example where a mix number is being added to a improper fraction. Because I used the [a^b/c] key this makes the calculator display the answer in a mixed fraction format or, a proper fraction format. If I press the [a^b/c] key again after the answer the format will change to a decimal format. The fractional formats are displayed in a mixed number, improper or, proper fraction formats. A improper fraction is really a proper fraction number with the top number (numerator) is greater than or equal to the bottom number (denominator).

[ON/C] [3] [a^b/c] [1] [ [a^b/c] [2] [+] [4] [a^b/c] [3] [=] mixed number results. Now let's do the same calculation as a improper or, proper fraction format.

[ON/C] [7] [a^b/c] [2] [+] [2] [a^b/c] [3] [=] still a mixed number result. Even though I enter the fractions in a improper and, proper fraction formats the calculator will still display in a mixed number format. This is because the calculator first displays as a mixed number if it can. If it can't then it will display the value as a proper fraction and, never as a improper fraction. To convert from a mixed number to a improper fraction format if the calculator did not convert it to a proper fraction, I have to use [2ndF] [d/c] keys on the command line.

This show a little more complex raised power use of the [a^b/c] key.

This shows the [2ndf] [x^-1] keys being used to calculate fractions.

When I first saw this question being asked it, was answered with just use the / command. Which that isn't really a good answer because, in math we like to use elimination. If you use the / command eventually the numbers are going to be rounded off and, your not going to be able to eliminate anything. If you have any further question on how to preform fractions with this calculator be sure to post your comment and, I'll be glad to help.

First put the calculator in degree mode.

To convert from fraction to a decimal number first enter your fraction or, mixed number. I'll convert a mixed number to a fraction first since, I don't have a key for the symbol that shows that a number is a fraction on my keyboard. Example: [3][A b/c][1][A b/c][2][A b/cd/e][ENTER]

3/2 should be entered at the home screen. While at the Home screen enter, [2nd][FD][ENTER]

1.5 should now be displayed at the Home screen.

As you can see it is really just using the [A b/c] key to enter in your fraction and, [FD] key to do the converting. The [A_b/cd/e] key isn't necessary because, mixed numbers will convert to decimal numbers just like fractions do. I just don't have the key to show a fraction symbol that the calculator uses. So to show that symbol, I used the / symbol with the fraction number.

If you enter an improper fraction or a mixed fraction with the the [a b/c] key it will be displayed as a fraction. This result being displayed you can press the [F-D] key to convert the fraction to decimal. If you do nothing else and you press the [F-D] key again, the original fraction will be restored.

However, it seems that you cannot enter an arbitrary decimal number and convert it to a fraction. The [F-D] key seems to work one way : from a fraction to a decimal number. You will only recover a fraction if the original number was a fraction.

Proper fraction e.g. 3/5, input 3, divide, 5, =, answer 0.6

Improper fraction, either enter as improper fraction, or enter the whole number first, then +, then the proper fraction as before, then =.

E.g. 8/5 which is "1 and 3/5': enter 1, +, 3, "divide", 5 =, answer is 1.6

Or, just 8, "divide", 5, same 1.6 answer. Why go to mixed number first?

13/5 which is "2 and 3/5", enter 2, +, 3, "divide", 5, =, answer is 2.6. Or, just 13/5, same answer
