Heater comes on but quickly over heats.

Holmes model HCT460-U. The heater comes on but quickly over heats. The fans seems to be working when it comes on. Is there a filter on this heater which needs to be cleaned periodically? I have a Holmes utility heater model HCT460-U. The heater comes on but quickly over heats and shuts off. The fan is working, it seems to blow warm air. Is there a filter on this model which needs to be cleaned. If so where on the heater would it be located.

Re: Heater comes on but quickly over heats.

There is no Filter On this Model. Check to make sure there is Dirt in the Flow way of the two towers. if that is not it the back up fuse in the heater is going bad.

Heater won't stay on, I heard there was a recall on this item.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
I am only answering part of your question (Recall) so do not rate the post so other experts can help you with your heater won't stay on problem.
Your heater model is not one of the 4 models that were recalled.

The recall involves Holmes® models HFH6498-U, HFH6500-U and HFH6500TG-U and Bionaire® model BFH3530-U. The recalled heaters also have date codes beginning with 2604 through 3804 for all units, except for Holmes® model 6500TG-U, which has date codes ranging from 2604 through 4704. The model and date code can be found on the silver label on the back of the unit. The heater fans are 26 inches tall; come in all gray, two-tone gray, or black and gray; and have either the word Holmes® or Bionaire® printed on the front of the base.

Holmes Heater HCH 4163 purchased 2 years ago & has seen only light duty. Upon turning heater on there is a severe electrical smell allthough heater appears to function normally; cord & heater do...

I think the warrenty on this heater is one year. If the heater housing and cord are not overheating then I would remove back panel and clean fiter and brush, vacumn,or use compressed air to clean motor and fan blades. It's possible that if you have not been using very much that it's just burning off debris and causing the smell. I hope this helps you. Thanks

My holmes heater will not turn on, but the light comes on when the thermostat kob is turned to lo.. but the fan inside isnt working.. this happened out of nowhere

Same problem, I took it apart and found that the thermostat had failed, there are "points" burnt out (like in older cars distributors) that make contact at the thermostat and there were some solder joints which had come loose as well, adding up to no contact through the "hot" side of the wiring. Basically it's not something you can repair, just go buy a new heater, they're about $30. If you decide to try to fix it, beware, it might be dangerous if you don't do everything exactly right, also beware that parts might cost more than the heater.

Heater wont run on hi and doesn't get warm at all

One of two things here. You blew an internal fuse or the heating element is broken. Take your unit apart and check for bad fuses and also check that the heating coil has continuity. Let me know how you make out.

Not heating

Sounds like either the thermostat or the element. If you hear a clicking when you rotate the thermostat you can assume that it is working. My advise is to replacethe heater. The element is sealed inside the oil chamber and the thermostat will cost almost as much as a new heater, sorry.
