Question about Kenmore 15864/15862 Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Kenmore 90 series will not agitate, spin

Checked the motor coupler (intact, replaced it 1.5 yrs ago) and lid switch (intact, responds to being depressed by screwdriver).

Agitator/basket will attempt to spin, but fail within 5 seconds.

Visual inspection shows no oil under the chassis.

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Check for something stuck between the basket and tub, otherwise you probably have an internal gearcase problem.

Replaced Kenmore 90 coupler - now NOTHING works!

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

The first and easiest question is: Did you remember to re-connect the Lid Switch???

If it still won't agitate or spin, I'd check that the Motor coupler was installed correctly and hasn't destroyed itself.

I'd also test the switch.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part and only requires you to access the console and remove the cabinet.

I have a kenmore 90 series washer that won't spin. It makes a grinding type noise at that point in the cycle. I followed the trouble shooting guide and checked the motor/gearbox coupler. The coupler looks...

If the coupling is OK then the problem is most likely to be further up the drive-line, which means the gearbox has probably failed. .........Nomess

Kenmore 90 series will not agitate or spin

Bubba, before you get into the spin tube, brake or clutch, this sounds more like you have something caught between the basket and tub or you have something jammed in the pump. First check that out and post back. Catriver.
