The screen still displays the image but the backlight if off

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-A690. When I turn on the laptop, it works fine. Windows loads and I can work. After a while, the screen starts to flash momentarily black. Shortly after the flashing, the screen goes black, not from it turning off but from the backlight turning off. The screen still displays the image but the backlight if off so the image is very hard to see. If I hook up the computer to a monitor, everything works great. What should I do to fix this problems.

As told in this item: my laptopscreen also turns dark (without backlight) but keeps working correctly. I have a HP Compaq NX6110. Please tell me what to do and what the costs might be in Euro.
    Thank you in advance.

The problem is in fact the backlight as you are saying but i am not sure if it is the wiring to the power supply or if your backlight is just burning out. You can ask the company if you can send it in for them to look at it.

You need to get the inverter changed out. Thats the part that changes DC to AC and powers the backlight

Sony Vaio VGN A-690 no battery detected

Yeah. If when you take out the A/C adapter, the laptop goes off immediately, even though you have bought a new battery, then it's definitely some hardware issue with the laptop itself. I'd say just live with it as it wouldn't be worth getting fixed (cheaper to get a new laptop).

If it can run on battery fine, it's just that windows indicates that the battery is not detected, then it could be a software issue. But given it's the same in Windows 7 as with XP, this could be BIOS related. Perhaps try flashing the BIOS?

I need to know how to install a laptop hinge on a sony vaio a690? Is it required that I remove the lcd when I attempt to install the hinge?

As the hinge is what binds the display assembly to the laptop itself, you will need to remove the display assembly in order to replace the hinge. However, if you are only replacing the hinge cover, then you don't have to remove the display assembly.

My lcd is really bright then all these black blocks coming from the right going to the left no pictures, laptop works with a external ok. What am I looking for?

Hi,

Please restart the computer and press the F2 key to access the BIOS setup. If the issue persist in the BIOS also then the issue is with the LCD screen, in that case service will be required to replace the LCD screen. You may either contact Sony Service Center at:

https://eservice.sony.com/webrma/web/index.do

Or you may also contact your favorite hardware vendor.

Based on the information, it seems that those are dead pixels and a LCD replacement will required.

The following are the Display part numbers:

A1062138A- Sharp Display Model# LQ170M1LA04
A8119991A - LCD Harness
468257801 - LCD Hinge (L)
468257701 - LCD Hinge (R)
468238001 - LCD Hinge Cover
147862922 - LCD Inverter

Thanks!!!!

Sony vaio vgn nr160e laptop - no display (intermittent). Attached monitor shows display fine and laptop works fine. Screen used to flicker intermittently (last few days).

You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashes on and off or displays reddish pink hue. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickers on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replace the CCFL lamp.
To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight. It could be a faulty inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out, usually the CCFL lamp fails before the inverter.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.
