Dell photo printer 720

Hello,

My PC does not have a parallel port for DB25. I need to get a printer cable to connect to my USB port on the PC. Could you let me know what are the specifics of the cable on the printer side (It looks like a smaller version of a centronics connection) Hope this helps.

thanks in advance

You might be able to find a cable eg. on eBay HOWEVER I have tried these in the past and have NEVER been able to get them to work ...

Sorry to say your printer is obsolete (in fact I'll be surprised if you can still get ink for it). Why not save yourself a lot of wasted money, time and effort by scrapping this one and purchasing a USB printer ?

NB. Dell printers are the MOST expensive in terms of INK .. HP are the MOST difficult to use with 'compatible' Ink Cartridges and Canon has the worst (most difficult to setup) software (although they do make models with separate Ink tanks where the 'chip' is easy to move to a compatible cartridge).. take your pick ...

How to connect to the computer?

Devices: Canon CanoScan FB330P/FB630P Color Flatbed Scanners

Check pages 22-23 of this copy of your Canon Canoscan 630P Product Guide.

You'll need an "IBM-type" parallel printer cable - with a DB25 on each end, and your computer will also need to have an "IBM-type" DB-25 parallel printer port.

What the Canon Product Guide fails to mention is that this "IBM-type" printer cable is a kluged Centronics parallel printer cable, but became so popular (on older computers - your laptop may not have this port), that it got an IEEE standard: IEEE 1284 (with DB25 connectors on both ends).

You'll need a DB25-to-DB25 M/F cable, meaning DB25 connectors on both ends, with a Male on one end, and a Female on the other end.
The Male DB25 will plug into the Female DB25 connector on your computer/laptop, with the Female DB25 going to the FB630P Color scanner..
Here are some pictures/pricing:
http://www.computercablestore.com/IEEE_1284_Printer_DB25_to_DB25_catID2134.aspx

The nice thing about the design of the Canon FB630P Color Scanner is that the scanner also has a Female DB25 Printer port for an existing parallel printer, so when you connect an FB330P/FB630P to your system, your existing parallel printer is daisy-chained through this port - so you needn't give up you printer (to scan), nor must you install another parallel printer port onto your PCI-bus tower PC to keep your printer.

Most modern printers are USB-attached to laptop systems, so you may need an adapter, an example of which is seen here:

I just bought a new computer and the connections don't match up. what do i do? I have the Eltron LP 2443PSA Thanks, Mike

I beleive your printer only has a Parallel interface and your new pc does not. You will need a USB to Parallel cable.

Kids gave me a printer/scanner Epson model number c171a. Need the cable to it. AN oldie but looks like a pretty nice printer. Can you help??

The cable you need depends on the unit. I am not aware of a C171a model from Epson. I have seen it listed as a version of the RX500. In that case you need a USB cable with A/B male ends.

Otherwise, most printers (from about 1997 on) will use a USB cable. This has two male ends - a square end goes into the printer and a rectangular end that goes to the computer (called A/B). For older printers (there may be multiple ports or just one), you may see a parallel port (the cable has a wide rectangular plug on both sides with 36 pins) or serial port (the cable may have DB9 (9 pin), DB25 (25 pin) or both). Often it is called a RS-232 port. For a parallel port connection, you would need one that is designed for scanners and bi-directional communication (USB to parallel adapters are available to connect this to a new computer but you still need the bi-directional version). Similarly, USB to serial adapters are available.

Generally you can tell what cable you need by looking at the back of the unit where the ports are. (Although some all-in ones have the USB cables in other places - routed through the side of the unit but the plug is near where the ink cartridges go.) Then the size and pin counts for parallel or serial tell you what cable to get. There is usually a symbol indicating the cable type as well near each port. USB cables are usually indicated by a tree like symbol with curved branches.

I hope this helps.

I'm not sure if I have the correct cord or if I have it pluged into the correct port.

It is either a usb "A" connector which is the squarish side of the usb cable and the flatter "B" connector is the side that goes into your computer's usb jack. Some printers, like yours also still use a parallel port which is a Centronics big, wide rectangular connector that connects to the printer side and the other end is a DB25 parallel connector than goes to the parallel DB25 printer jack on your computer. You must have at least one of those cables but you only use one or the other. The usb will be configured to a usb local printer port or the parallel will use the LPT1 port. HP.com will provide you with a quick install brochure with pictures for you to see. post back if you need more help! Steve Medley

My printer doesn't have the usb to connect it to the computer - what do i need to do?

If the printer does not have the square USB connector (USB B end), then it will have parallel. Parallel is a wide connector that plugs in to a DB25 connector on the back of your computer. These parallel port printer cables can still be picked up at just about any office supply or computer store.

What if your computer does not have the DB25 parallel port but the printer does? Well there are USB to Parallel Port adapters made specifically for this scenario. They can run $10 to $30 depending on where you go. I recomend www.Geeks.com for those. That will allow you to plug an older printer in to a newer machine.

If it's made for a mac only, there should be a small circular port about the same size as a PS/2 keyboard or mouse. That is to connect to the Mac serial bus. This is differant than the barrel connector or brick used to supply power to the printer.

Hope this helps.
