Not cooling frig or freezer. Both fans working. Lights working. Sounded like compresser running but, an on and off clicking sound (about 10 seconds apart) from or near compresser. Removed cover at rear of freezer compartment and found the coils dry and warm. I fear compresser is kaput. Is that something I can buy and replace myself?

SOURCE: Whirlpool Top-Mount Refrigerator Freezer warm, cracking noise

8yr old? Buy a new one. The cracking sound is from expansion and contraction of the cabinet and ice cooling or defrosting. It can be as simple as a bit of a top up of refrigerant, but can also be that your compressor has worn down the valve plates and therefore is not producing sufficient pressure throught the system.

SOURCE: Whirlpool Side By SIde Refrigerator Freezer stopped cooling

5 reasons for fridge and/or freezer getting warm: 1- the evaporator coils are icing up and won?t let air circulate. 2- the evaporator fan is not working to circulate air. 3- there is no refrigerant in the system. 4- no power to fridge or compressor. 5- the condenser coils have no air circulation check under the fridge behind the vent. if it is too dusty or the fan isn?t working, it is not getting enough airflow to cool down. replace fan and/or vacuum out the dust. if there is no power to the fridge, the light will be off. if the compressor is not running, there is a defrost timer that cuts the power temporarily to the compressor to melt ice on the coils. it?s located under the fridge behind the bottom vent. If the timer is off and the compressor is not going, the compressor or the main board is bad and needs replacing. there is also a temperature sensor on the evaporator coils that tells the defrost coil to turn on and when to turn off. if the defrost timer is on but the coil is not heating up, replace the sensor. if it still won?t heat up, it?s the timer or the coil. the easiest way to tell if there is no refrigerant- the freezer wall is warm and the compressor is loud. if there is no refrigerant, it may be more cost effective to replace the fridge. if you feel no air coming from the freezer vent, the fan needs replacing. If you feel air moving in the freezer but not the fridge, the channel from freezer to fridge is blocked. if the freezer has air and the rear freezer wall has frost on it, the evaporator coils are iced up and need defrosting. causes: 1. low refrigerant 2. no fan 3. too much humid air in fridge/freezer due to door open or bad door seals 4. the condensate drain tube is clogged if the seal around the door is ripped or not completely sealing, or there is condensation at the bottom or the walls of the fridge, replace the seal(s). no air, no fan. Replace if the refrigerant is low, it just needs a top off. but you need to be certified by the epa to move refrigerant, so get a professional. defrost solutions: unplug the fridge. remove the wall of the freezer that is frosted/icing up. use a hair dryer to melt the ice. do not get too close. you will see a drain under the evaporator coil. make sure it is not blocked. the water should run freely to a condensate pan under the fridge that evaporates the condensation with the hot line from the compressor. once the coil is free of ice, frost, and water, replace the panel and repair any of the problems that caused the icing up. plug the fridge in and turn it on. If it frosts up within a week, there is still an issue that not been taken care of.

SOURCE: whirlpool etowsrxmq03-- back wall of freezer is

Good day,
Yes that is normal. It is going thru one of it's automatic defrost cycles to melt off excess frost building on the cooling coil mounted behind the rear panel in the freezer section.
The red glow is the heater doing it's job. It does this for a short period of time, and causes the rear panel to become somewhat warm, but only for a short period.

It only occurs about once a day randomly, and lasts only 21 minutes, so the odds of seeing it are rare.

My freezer is icing over and thawing food somewhat then refreezing

If the self defrosting circuit is not working properly the freezer will ice up and internal temps will go up and thaw food. U indicate that it refreezes so whst could be the problem is the timer that controls the frequency and timing of the defrost cycle.

We have a whirlpool et1rhmxkq03. I have replaced defrost timer and thermostat. Defrost timer seems to stall and freezer thaws and the compressor stops running. I tap the control housing in the refr

The problem is with the "thermostat" right next to the defrost timer. When you tap on the control, you are actually tweaking the thermostat and not the defrost timer. Here is the thermostat to order.
Here is a diagram of the control box. The thermostat is number 13 and the defrost time is number 4.

Hotpoint freezer, High temp light on & all food thawing

It's probably the defrost timer is getting stuck in the defrost mode. What it does it it periodically interrupts power to the compressor and sends power to the defrost coils to allow any frost on the cooling coils to melt to keep them clear of ice build up. This is typically a mechanical timer and sometimes the motor fails and it stop turning and if it fails in the defrost mode, the compressor never turns back on no matter how warm the freezer is.

You can confirm it is the timer, by tracing the wires from the compressor to a little 2 by 2 inch box which is the timer. On one side there should be a round hole with a plastic cam. You should be able to turn that cam with a flat screw driver or a coin. Just give it a slight turn until you hear a click. After you turned the cam, the compressor should start. If it does, then it is the timer.

Food is thawing in the freezer. Strange sound -

you need to know what is causing the problem. no simple fix. look for ice in back or freezer. if so the heater or the terminator or the defros timer could be at fault . most newer frig's have ( adaptive defrost control ( a p c ) board that controls defrost . a very common problem . simple things ( clean lint from coils underneath / make sure a mouse or paper hasn't stop the fan . make sure fan inside freezer is going aso . hope this help mm ..

Freezer thaws then refreezes

I was going to suggest that maybe it is a self defrost issue not shutting off when it should but sine you mentioned this knob, it suggests a thermostat out of calibration - I can rule out circuit problems since you can manually turn on compressor by turning the knob to a cooler position - you will need to have it serviced and change the thermostat which is not cycling whne it's supposed to.

ALSO - do not refreeze foods in your freezer that have thawed ! Throw them away !!! Normal freezer temps should not be warmer than 10F, the normal temps are 0F, and optimal recommended temp -10F (for hard ice cream) and to allow better recovery in case of power failures.

Refrigerator section no warmer tan 40F.....optimal recommended 34F.
