Question about Canon PIXMA MP830 All-In-One InkJet Printer

MP830 and JetDirect 175x print server

I am setting up a Canon MP830 on a HP JetDirect 175x external network print server.

I have two problems. The first problem is I cannot print the test page/config page from the print server to the MP830. The second problem is I cannot add this printer from my windows XP PC. The first problem could be causing the second problem I guess.

I can see the print server on the network with my network magic software. When I log into the printserver with network magic, I can see the the print server sees the MP830 through the USB connection (gets a serial number back and so on).

But that's all I can do so far...

    Hi szwaan/darklord1,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have not had a chance to try them yet. I have my normal job, and then my job as the home IT guy comes later. I may not get to the suggestions until the weekend.

My operation system is XP. The printserver does not show up on my network places, though it is seen by my router and by the network configuration program "network magic"

I tried the suggestions above and they did not work.

Also, I cannot get the JetDirect 175x print server to print the test/configuration page on the Canon MP830. I have cycled through all the status languages (PCL, ASCII, Postscript, well not HP-GL2).

    Are these two devices compatible?

    Hi Nitrotrike,

This is a useful suggestion. I can't see the printer though to right click on it. I can get the IP address for the print server.

After further work/googling it appears in general that print servers are not highly compatible with all-in-one products like the ML830. I am going to give up on getting this combination to work.

There is a canon supported print server for the MP830 that I just ordered.

Back to ebay for the JetDirect 175x!

    - Andy

Just to throw my 2 cents in here:

When I set up a small laserjet on an old PONY print server, I had to assign the IP manually in the port settings.

The problem with this is every time the power went out, etc, I would have to go to my routers configuration page to see what IP it was assigned each time, and change it so it would work.

To do this, and if you know the print servers IP:

Go to printers and Faxes
Right click on the printer
Click 'properties'
Choose the 'ports' tab
Scroll all the way to the bottom to 'standard TCP/IP Port' and check the box next to it.
Click on "configure port"
You can manually enter the ports IP in there.

Did you try plugging it it directly in to the PC first, install the drivers, and then connect it through the print server?

Ok, I'm just gonna throw some things out there..

Is the default printer the Canon Pixma ?

Verify network connectivity.
Make sure you can acces the server.
Make sure the printer availability time is right.
Using the Add Printer Wizard, search for the printer.

Well, that's all I got for now.

I expected them to be compatible, But your server is an Hp and your printer is canon.

So this Hp website says otherwise.

Use the Jetdirect 175x with a broad range of USB HP printers and all-in-ones."

How do I set up an HP JetDirect 170X Print Server with Windows 8.1 Operating System?

Connect the printer to the print server. Push the test button on the test button on the print server. Two pages will print. One of the pages will contain the IP address for the print server. Connect the print server to the router. Now you need to go to the Control Panel and select "Devices and Printers". Select "Add a Printer". When it searches for a printer, select "The printer I want isn't listed". Next, select "Add a printer using TCP/IP address or hostname" and click "Next". Now, enter the IP address from the test print and click next. That will do it.

How to change the ip address of a hp jetdirect 170X

The manual is located here, and it recommends the following procedure, which starts on page 18.

Connect the Jetdirect box to the printer and the network and power on.
Press the Test button on the back of the Jetdirect box to print a configuration page.

The configuration page should show the IP address of the Jetdirect box.

If this is an IP address in the normal range of your network, ie the first three numbers of the Jetdirect box's IP address and your computer's IP address is the same (such as 192.168.0.) then simply type the IP address into your computers internet browser and you can reach the configuration page. The steps on page 58 detail the user interface for the web login.

If the Jetdirect box does not get an IP address withing 2 minutes of it booting up, it assigns itself an IP address of, and you can connect to it over the network if you change your own network settings to 192.0.0. and a number from 1-254 (but not 192).

Can the Canon MP830 be set up as a network printer. If so, how do I do it?

It can be done two ways. First, you can purchase a Silex Print Server C-6700WG and connect the MP830 to your network through this server. Second, you can connect the MP830 to one computer in your network and use that computer as a server to handle print jobs from other computers (clients) on the network (called print sharing).

Information on how to do either of these can be found here. Type "network printing" in the small search window in the center of the screen and click the Search button. You will find several links related to network printing/printer sharing.

I can not print when I connect to my jetdirect print server.

Hi, sorry for late answer, I have been offline for a while.

Connect RJ45 to router and parallel to computer
You need to download Software here first selecting 300x and windows version.
Then you can use the HP JetDirect Wireless Setup Wizard
to setup your printer on network.
You may also be required to install printer drivers, to do this use printer CD or download them from the Internet.

610N dissapeared no lights, empty EIO, reset no help

If you're seeing it intermittently, try the following:

-remove it completely
-power cycle the printer with it out
-check your contacts (be sure no bent pins, etc)
-Try it in a different slot if you have one (most HP's with an internal jetdirect have 2-3 EIO slots, but since you don't mention what model printer you have I don't know for sure).

If it's not talking after all that, likely the jetdirect is actually dead. It's been known to happen. I wouldn't waste the money on a replacement, you'll have better luck getting an external card and it'll be cheaper, too.

HP sells both the JetDirect 170X and 175X externals; there's also the Linksys PSUS4, D-Link DP-300U, TrendNet TE100-P1P, or Netgear PS101NA. Price will vary between $45-80.

Cannot print to Deskjet using JetDirect 175x

What model Deskjet is it?

Some models of USB printer are what is known as "host-based", which means that the printing functions are all handled by the computer. These printers won't communicate through an external JetDirect device at all. The most notorious is HP's Laserjet 1020 series, but a lot of the DeskJet series are host-based as well.

If the JetDirect test page isn't getting communicated, chances are you are out of luck.
